Hey zin, or anyone that may have registered on the site. Can you put a bug in the dev's ears to possibly look into other distribution partners? I don't think I'd be willing to buy it from Digital River unless the price comes way down. I'd be willing to pay what they're asking if it were on D2D or Steam though.

I've seen it mentioned several times on the forums, maybe moreso on the general Matrix forums. still not sure if I want to register as a member yet...

It just seems really short-sighted that they don't use Steam or D2D, though. Not that I'm privy to their business model, but having this available on the ocasional sale or free trial basis would likely attract a shit-ton of fans.

Considering that this game is still buggy enough to be considered Beta, it's too much to pay for it.

You have to admit, they are a non-US business. Digital River may be more appealing in that regard. I'd understand that, but there's no reason not to explore wider distribution unless there's some sort of cost prohibition.

Did you get the first or second update (1.04 Beta 2)?

They released a quick update to the update in the afternoon.

I haven't loaded the game since either was released. Just wasting time at work, really....
:whiste:

and it looks like the successful economy in the new version is a bit different than previous. ...Not that I've gotten it working without avoiding some serious recessions and a small civil war (for srs :(), but it appears as though I'm going to have to start failing at learning a new colonizing strategy. :D

Bump-a-roo!

so, anyone else taken the plunge, yet? I'm still digging it, but I tend to re-start games early on and haven't really gotten the chance to play to the very end of a major empire.

Lots of good things seem to be going on with the v 1.04 beta updates, though I still haven't tried that version. My game doesn't want to download it, for some reason. :hmm:

can you design ships?

yup. the forums has a nice thread taking you through the process. Takes some time to get used to it, and the save features mixed in with the various AI controls makes it somewhat frustrating to take command of your designs, but they are working on it.

I haven't gotten too far beyond middle stages of an empire, but it seems the tech tree is fairly thin at the moment, or at least research (in v 1.03) is way too fast. I believe that has been made a bit slower in v 1.04, though.

Regardless, I think there's are only 3 or 4 levels of improvement for each stage (blaster, big weapon, hyperdrives, etc). I hope they push more stages of tech in the future.

No sorry. Nobody has "donated" to my cause yet.

sounds like this could be a pretty good game then, now the question is how is the AI?

Because there is a series called Space Empires which has probably the most amazingly in-depth detailed space strategy ever made and I LOVE that. But the AI sucks so the game is completely boring.... It's a crying shame

When you say design your on ships do mean their weapons, sensors, etc? What about there looks? Can you build them like in Galactic Civ 2?

you can currently select from a list of pre-made designs for each ship. A series of designs that defaults for each race.

of course, with modding, you can pretty much do what you want. some modder on the forums has a fleet of ships based on star wars designs...

the components involve fuel, energy, hyperdrive, thrusters, and all the weapons. you mix and alter the energy components, based on the increasing size of your ship (the more junk you throw in it), and you can tweak acceleration and turning capability. There is a maximum size limit for ships, but that is increased through empire research into Industry (construction cranes).

The AI is ...OK currently. They are releasing updates about once per week right now, mostly tweaking AI behavior regarding the economy, and how much your advisers bug you. For the most part (in v 1.03), the advisers are mostly wrong every time they suggest what you should build, military action, etc. If you fully automate the economy, it will over-build mines and other ships, stretching maintenance costs well beyond what they should be. It's easy to take these things over and do it yourself, but when just starting out, there's such a high level of detail that managing each little aspect can become cumbersome when trying to learn the game.

...this is what makes the lack of demo or current pricing so difficult. The game is obviously not perfect right now, so it's probably tough for a lot of people to take the plunge when some tweaking is still needed, and the download service is less than ideal.

Oh wow...I actually didn't realize this, but it appears that planets actually move--following their orbits throughout the game.

planets within the same system, colonized by separate empires, can move into the same orbital path, cause trade and ship routing disruptions, potentially leading to war.

haha, that's pretty cool...

FYI - 1.04 Beta 4 has just been released.

Economically, this one sounds a lot better than Beta 1 or Beta 2.
I'll have to check this one out tonight or tomorrow . . .

why is that? I'm curious; I hadn't heard of Matrix before Wanderer started this thread. They have some sort of reputation?

Their crappy prices for most of their product line, their charging more (above the already above normal srp) for boxed copies, and the shitty distro service they use.

1.04 Final patch has just been released.
A few more fixes, features and some rebalancing.

I liked most of the 1.04beta4 changes, this one (1.04 final) should be pretty good.

cool. I still haven't tried any of the 1.04 betas, but the updates sound really good from what I've read. I just want to finish a game--or at least get somewhere into late game before I start a new one, heh.

Haven't played it that much in recent days, though. :\

This sounds like a fun game, but I won't have time to play it for a long time. Bug them to put it on steam, that way I can add it to the back of my list of other games I need to play (after I stop being re-addicted to X3).

just bought it and playing it now, it is lots of fun so far

Yeah, I've been spending a lot of time with it.

Almost every patch makes it almost like a new game, and they've been really good at addressing the bugs that have crept up.
The last couple of patches they have been re-balancing the Economy and they've added a few new features as well.

The next major patch (1.05) is supposed to come out next week I believe. This is supposed to a fairly large change as far as features and functionality go.
There may be a minor patch or two between now and then to address any issues that come up - we had three patches last week to fix some minor issues and tighten the Economy a bit.

I've been very impressed with the support this company has given so far and their attention to customer requests/comments.
From what I've heard, they have quite a bit more planned in upcoming patches.

I don't understand why these sorts of games can't be ported to a better setting?

Like the ancient or medieval world. The game wouldn't be all over the place, and it would actually be engaging. Just doesn't make sense.

Its a fair question. I guess the main reason they prefer space is it opens so many possibilities you just couldnt have anywhere else.
Plus, we already have plenty of medieval conquor the world games. A good example is Rise of Nations.
Actually, that one bounces around different epochs so maybe its not a good example.

I think space settings are preferred cuz you can research all kinds of crazy shit which lets you make good use of the 4X system.
In a medieval game it wouldnt really be fun to research the stock, the bow, the wheel, the cog, the spring, and the bolt, just to have a freaking crossbow.
But researching materials, energy, and systems to make a star destroyer is a lot more fun.
