Distance with Wireless Routers

Interested in the short answer to how far from a home access node can I be to connect...

I understand there are several determining factors like house structure, and antennae position, but can I get 40-60 yards and still have connectivity? or is wireless just more like a decent cordless phone and I could get 10-30 yards?

Do I need to look into pringle cans to increase this, if needed?

My old siemans got 15 feet, if I was lucky. My new SMC Barricade gets 75 feet with 75% signal, but I haven't tried any farther.

I've heard people say that WAPs tend to give better signals then wireless routers, but I can't confirm or deny that.

I probably get 50-70 feet off my LinkSys WAP/Router. It's one of the original ones. (They are now up to V3, I think.) If I move 20 feet away from the thing, the system tray tool indicates that I have a poor signal, but I think it "exaggerates" as I still communicate over it just fine. This is going through the walls of my house (including the outside one).

i use one in my house and setup a few for ppl.. seems to depend somewhat on ur wall thickness..
In my house the access point is on the 2nd floor and the comp in the basement gets a really good connection, thats using some old netgear equipment. I was setting up a wireless network in some dudes house that makes superbowl commercials.. and computers two rooms apart wouldnt connect to each other.. im guessing his house is better insulated than mine.. ended up running a network on the phone lines in the house.. which actually worked pretty good..

It depends a LOT from the hardware. I had an Edimax, which was a POS. Got me 30 yards at most + I "lost" the connection all the time. Switched to D-link, and now I can go anywhere in my house+ outside and still have 80% signal. I have an IBM X24 laptop with built in WLAN and antennas. I'd say I get at least 100 yards with fair signal.

On the other hand, my friend with his Compaq and some "noname" pcmcia card could barely be in the next room to have a good signal???

I'd get also get everything from same manufacturer, namely D-link, if I was buying now.

i think i was using linksys equipment for the install i had all the problems with.. but like i said, it may have just been because the walls were abnormally thick..

ive had great luck with Netgear wirless equip..
