When do they start dissolving?

Just had a tooth pulled 2 days ago (it broke and needed a root canal so meh) and one of the stitches just broke off. I'm trying to figure out If I just ripped it out while eating (I didn't feel any pain) or if it was weak from dissolving and the stitch broke.
 
I had mine hanging around at the back of the throat for 3-4 days. It felt a bit weird. One dissolved enough to break off, and I ate it with food apparently. Another one was pulled out by the nurse at a followup appointment a week later. It all depends.
