God damn man, i didn't know that.

We lost one good man right there, but if you'd like, PM me regarding your applied position and i'll ask my friends to check out what you can apply and qualify for.

Thanks man, but this was back in 2001, I've moved on, lol. It was for the SEAL program. I smoked the PFT and kicked ass in the SEAL workouts at bootcamp. I trained for it for a couple of years with some SEALs (I grew up right by the Naval Academy) and even did a couple of mini hell weeks down at Ft. Story, so I was prepared physically and mentally, but I know it's still a slim chance that I would've made it all the way through BUD/S.

Anyways, I moved on, got a job as a cop for a few years then moved into the IT field. Now I'm making lots of money and I love what I'm doing. If you would've told me back in my senior year of high school that in 10 years I'd be spending 40+ hours a week at a desk working on computers I would've called you crazy. Moral of the story OP, things happen for a reason and everything will work out for you. Just use this as a learning experience, it'll only make you stronger.

Edit - I got lucky because the SEAL program along with the A-school that I picked both required perfect color vision. This is why I was allowed to get out, my contract was messed up. For some reason I passed the color vision test at MEPS, even though I couldn't see half of those little numbers in the color vision test. I almost got stuck being on a ship for 4 years, that would've really sucked.

Sorry to hear about that OP.

Happened to me too. Had everything ready to go (for entering the Air Force Academy). Letters of recommendations from a senator, all required tests, paperwork etc., then I was pulled aside for a surgery I had when I was 14.

That was my goal and it was taken away. I still haven't sorted out what I'm going to do with my life.

Well, if you can take the attention, start your own media frenzy. Make a web site, call local papers and TV stations, hell get ahold of Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, whoever.

It's a travesty that needs to be addressed. You want to serve our country, why should something so utterly unrelated to ability wipe you out like that?

Oh yeah the media LOVES picking on the military. lol that's like going after firefighters.

I've dealt with hardarses for a long time and i can tell you, the FL soldiers are REAL hardarses, i'd rather have them covering me than some wimpy omg soldier now marines which don't even have basic training these days.

In the FL you get to jog 10 miles with full packing, where i'm from it's 30 miles, in the marines they are happy to get them up to half a mile before shipping them out.

They lowered the qualification standards in 03, that is why.

Trust me, there are a lot of people who wouldn't qualify for a mall guard in any other nation that qualify for service in the US.

The reputations regarding gangsta marines has not come undeserved.

You have reached new heights of jackassery. Well done sir.

Lol, no military branch is desperate. I looked up the numbers a while back, and all branches have been meeting recruiting goals 100-110%...I was surprised too.

The incentives + economy will do that (plus the normal people it's a great career for).

Wot? I'm certainly not dissing SAS, FFL, etc, but the Marines aren't exactly a joke. They all have to go through the Crucible, and those that go on to pass Recon are some hardcore motherfuckers.

The Crucible

A Rite of Passage for all Marines

The Crucible is the 54-hour culmination to the transformation of recruit training. It is a physically and mentally challenging event that involves food and sleep deprivation and the completion of various obstacles for the potential Marine to negotiate.
Basic Facts

* Recruits will travel 48 miles on foot during the event.
* There are 29 problem-solving exercises during the Crucible.
* It consists of 36 different stations.
* The recruits will have three meals, ready-to-eat (MREs) during the 54 hours.
* The recruits will be required to carry 45 pounds during the Crucible, in addition to 782 gear, uniform and M16 A2 service rifle weight.

I was disqualified too, mine was because some quack diagnosed me with Asthma when I was 8 years old when all I had was bronchitis. It was the best thing that ever happened to me career wise. I would never have been debt free (even mortgage) by the time I was 33 with military pay and now free to do just about anything I want with my life.

This reference is dated 10-Sep-2008 directly from the Army Publishing Directorate. Boomer's is from 2004.

But I want to know how the unexplained absence of the testicle conversations go.

MD : You're missing a testicle.
Recruit: ...
MD : Why are you missing a testicle?
Recruit: Errr
MD : Guards!

If you really want to, you could always write your Congressman and/or Senator.

I got disqualified because I broke my jaw :(

I'm assuming it's because the risk of losing the other one and being infertile is high without a 'backup'

They never lowered the standards. Common misconception.

And, for what it's worth, the second stupidest Soldier's I've ever worked with were British Special Forces (first being some Iraqi's) :p

According to that OP shouldn't be disqualified.

I'm air force national guard. The air force rocks. They treat you and your families like humans. The food is good and the jobs are technical to actually help you get nice jobs in te real world. Also helps with security clearances too

I strongly recommend and I joined after I got my bachelors which they now pay it off for me :)

Well, it is the Air Force. They're not exactly hurting for officers. They can make up reasons to disqualify people and still have sufficient numbers.

If you were planning on doing engineering in the Air Force, you can still work for the Air Force as a civilian. I did that for a while at Wright-Patterson AFB. Half my coworkers were civilian and half were air force. The only difference was we didn't have to wear uniforms or salute to people.

Yeah, they're making the PT tests harder too. IIRC if you fail any part of it you fail the whole thing. If you fail it three times, you're gone.

wtf do you get your information?

AF, Marines, and Navy all raised thier standards over the past decade. The Army had to lower them briefly to fill an expanding manpower requirement, mainly in the national guard.

this,

its also why you have to have both kidneys, both lungs, both ovaries if you're a female, 10 fingers, 10 toes (unless you were born with less, I knew a guy with 4 toes per foot who was let in)

Why couldn't you keep some sperm in the freezer and sign a waiver saying I won't sue if I lose my last ball?

If this is because of higher medical risks, at what point in the future will they do genetic testing to see your risk of certain diseases are? The test isn't so expensive anymore (I had mine done for $200) and it makes a lot more sense than disqualifying someone because they only have one ball. Of course, there would be a huge public outcry (rightly so) if they did this, but it's just as arbitrary as only having one testicle.

I almost enlisted last summer (decided against it eventually), but the whole time I wante in, and this was for years, the only real thing I worried about was the medical standard. My eyes are about -7.00 now (absolute limit for Canadian Forces, US too I think, so was never infantry capable), and I may have flat feet. It really sucked when I decided not to join up myself, it turned my future plans to shit, but you get over it. Good luck if you want to fight it or go another path. You tried, which is more than a majority of the population ever did.

The recruited told me that it's a definite no. There are NO medical waivers for it.
Correction: there are no standard or pro forma medical waivers for it, but each branch of the service has the authority to waive almost ANY disqualifying medical condition on a case-by-case basis, which any person may seek after MEPS disqualification. Unfortunately, you need to go pretty high on the chain of command in order to get that waiver, which means you need some kind of connection or someone who will take-up your case and forward it to the necessary level.

See: Department of Defense (DOD) Directive 6130.3, Physical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, and Induction, and DOD Instruction 6130.4, Criteria and Procedure Requirements for Physical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction in the Armed Forces.

The fact that your planned MO is an in-demand skill at the officer level should bode well for your chances, if you can get it considered at the appropriate level. If you were planning to be a cook or something, not so much.
