Was it racially motivated? Who knows, but if it were on the other end of the spectrum i am sure good ole Al Sharpton would be all over this.
Tough call...but it looks like he was the only white kid on the bus...hard to imagine that his skin color had nothing to do with this. No doubt that if the situation was reversed...the reaction would be a tad more intense.

Ah no. There were several white kids on the bus. No excuse for the attack, none. In the article one of the students says that no one liked sitting with the kid. When no one would let him sit, he took the one kids book bag and threw it on the floor and sat down. They start arguing, then start pushing on each other, thats when the black kid goes looney and starts punching the boy. The kids then broke it up after a bit. Then some other kid jumps up afterwards gets up and starts punching the boy again. No one else hit the boy or held the boy. The first should be suspended, but that second boy should be more than just suspended.

I see no reason to make excuses for shool kids committing violent acts. Just charge the people doing the beating with assault, throw them in jail as adults and award the victim with attendance at a private school at the expense of the public school system who was responsible for his safety.

Ummmm he's right.

The police Chief has retracted his initial statement an based on further interviews the incident was in fact racially motivated.

Had it been the other way around the kids would be in Jail and Sharpton, Jackson and gang would be going fucking nuts as usual.

I made that post after briefly watching the editted video. I have since seen the unedited 13 minute video and saw that there were actually a few other white kids on the bus. In the 13 minute version you get a good close up of the kid that gotten beaten up as he exits the bus. They messed that 'cracker' up pretty good if you ask me.

LIMBAUGH: I think the guy's wrong. I think not only it was racism, it was justifiable racism. I mean, that's the lesson we're being taught here today. Kid shouldn't have been on the bus anyway. We need segregated buses -- it was invading space and stuff. This is Obama's America.

Just saying what every republican thinks (lol 'not racist' lol)

This is just another example of the oppression decent God Fearing White Folks now have to face under the reign of terror of Hussein Obama.

Racial violence is being constantly perpetrated against innocent Whites by minorities of all colors. Jimmy Carter was right about a culture of racial bias and fear. He was wrong who the victims actually are. Obama is The Black Hitler.

Student that interrupted bus fight speaks out

Steven Raines, the kid that stopped one of the attacks, seems like a good kid. Link above to an interview he did.

Students in Belleville school bus attack are charged

By Nicholas J.C. Pistor
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
09/18/2009

BELLEVILLE -- Two Belleville West High School students were charged under the juvenile code today with felony counts of aggravated battery stemming from the violent beating of a 17-year-old student on a school bus earlier this week.

The incident grabbed national headlines and incited a heated debate about race when police said the incident, involving a white victim and black assailants, may have been racially motivated. They later recanted that claim.

The two teenagers?who are 14 and 15 years-old?were charged as juveniles because they are under the age of 17. Illinois law shields the disclosure of their names because they are minors.

Juvenile courts are more informal and private than adult courts. Juvenile court records are not available to the general public.

Robert Haida, the St. Clair County state's attorney, said Illinois law does not permit him to charge the teens in adult court. The law mandates that a minor can be charged in adult court only if the case involves certain crimes, such as murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, or armed robbery with a firearm.

Warrants were issued for the defendants' immediate arrest. They had been in custody earlier but released pending investigation.

On the issue of a hate crime, Haida said: ?No evidence is present to suggest that the motive for the conduct was the race of the victim. Illinois law requires such evidence in order to support that charge. Illinois law is clear that the fact that a defendant and a victim are of different races is insufficient without more evidence to support a hate crime.?

Both students have been suspended from school and could face expulsion.

Belleville police released video of the Monday morning incident and labeled it ?racially motivated.? Later, a department spokesman said his initial comments were ?personal and emotional? and not accurate.

"The incident appears now to be more about a couple of bullies on a bus dictating where people sit,? said Capt. Don Sax.

The video depicted a violent attack after a 17-year-old student walked onto the bus and looked for a seat, but was apparently refused. He then took a seat next to one of his attackers, who lashed out with a series of punches to the victim's head. At one point, the attacker held the victim by the neck with one hand, while he punched his face with the other.

Another attack ensued a few minutes later, and was eventually halted by another student.

Just want to chime in and say that education is a privilege, not a right. Student's who abuse this privilege should lose it. Enough said!

Also, keep in mind the demographic of people on Anandtech who post here, generally we are intelligent people who were either nerds or popular, so we may either confide in the idea of the alone person beaten by the "man" or we might just scoff at it as "typical playground law". I've seen the vast majority of the reponses in this thread fall into those categories.

What is troubling with this is not the fight or the kid being unable to fight back, it's the limp-wristed response to stop the fight.

We all remember bus fights for those of us who rode on them, but I damn sure remember back in my day of the bus driver having the either stated or unstated authority to rip you out of your seat, turn the bus around, radio in the police, and make damn sure anyone is punished by means of rubber stamped administration.

It's nice to see the post-dispatch did a video with the kid who stopped the fight. He seems to be the only human aboard that bus. That actually makes me real proud that at least 1 person out of a bus of 35 or so is a respectable citizen. No good deed goes undone, hopefully it spreads around and infects the other munchkins

I have to say< i have a very dark sense of humor and I find overly-racist comments on both ends quite hilarious

"Joe said:
ironically the only person to help out the white kid on this bus of violent blacks was a black kid of mixed race. It took him so long to help because the black part of him thought the beating was right but then the white part of him mustered up the courage to help the the victim.
