lexmark z25 for 34.63, and HP 3320 for 28.88 at Wal-mart
Of the two I choose lexmark because you get black ink while the HP only came with color cartridges when printing anything in black and white using only color cartridge, things will be much slower then usual like 1 ppm and not 6ppm like they claimed, YUCK!
 
The wrong assumption in your theory, RobCur, is that Lexmark and HP ship these printers with a FULL cartridge included. They don't.

Yeah - they want you to go pay more for one cartridge than you just paid for the printer. If the print heads are normal though, get a refill kit (again, for around the price of the printer) but get a few more uses out of the thing. Don't expect much in the way of quality prints though.
 
The print cartridges are not half full, they have the same amount of ink as the catridges on the shelf. They are filled with the amount of ink corresponding to the specifications of the cartridge part number. At least HP doesn't do it anymore, but I don't know about Lexmark.
 
Last time I had hands on a new HP (it's been a while), the cartridge that came with the printer lasted four pages.

1. Pay more up front, and you save money in the long run. Canon has some amazing inkjet printers (the i8xx and i9xx line), and have *CERTIFIED* 3rd party carts for as cheap as $1.50 a pop.

2. The ink carts printers come with are usually 1/2 to 3/4 empty.
