Display Resolutions

I noticed that some display resolutions are ratios different then others. So some are more square then others, and others are wider or taller then others. So, when it comes to fitting the whole screen into your monitor doesnt the image get distorted? meaning, lets say you pick a resolution and the height fits, but not the length, you have to distort your screen to fit the monitor.

i am guessing the standard aspect ratio is 1.3 since when you divide 800/600 you get that. I have a 19 inch Sony 420S, if i stick with the 1280 by 960 setting it is on, it seems to not fit height wise.

1280/960=1.333... (correct aspect ratio)

1280/1024=1.25 (screwed up squished resolution, shouldn't exist on 4:3 monitors, OK for larger LCDs because they have a 1.25 ratio)

As long as you're using a standard monitor, 1280x960 is a "correct" resolution.

Stick with resolutions that are 4:3 & you will be fine.

i always adjust my monitor to my screen resolution, sometimes i flatten it down so i can use 1920x1080 wide screen

is there a way to know if i have adjusted my monitor correctly. Something similar to the print tests in a printer?

I like 1280/1024... I just switched to 1280/960 and something about it looks weird, but maybe that's because I've been using 1280/1024 so much.

if the ratio looks good to you , then use what you like . just use the controls for the moniter to adjust the H-size and V-size to fit your screen.

Since monitors can be stretched vertically or horizontally, ALL resolutions are likely to be distorted. So it doesn't matter if you like a 1.33 ratio or a 1.25 ratio on your resolution. Either one will likely be distorted, and either one can be adjusted so that it is displayed perfectly. The best thing you can do is to draw a circle and adjust the height and width until it looks round. Or you can draw a square and adjust them and measure the square with a ruler until it is the right size.

Plus many programs adjust for the aspect ratio anyways. If I program a game that draws a circle and I want it played at a 1.25 aspect ratio then I'll draw an oval so that it looks round on monitors...

my monitor cannot correctly adjust to the 1280x960 size it wont stretch the screen enough to fill the height and width

I never liked the 'correct' resolution on my 19" monitor. It always seemed squashed out of proportion. For three years I used 1280 X 1024 with no problem. Guess I will go to hell sometime. Anyway, use whatever you like and don't worry about it.

My LCD 18" has 1280 X 1024 as native so I am right at home.

it should have either controls on the monitor to do the adjustments or you need software for it .
please list the COMPLETE model # next time. (CPDG-420S)
