Display/Program settings reverting to defaults after reboot in 98SE

Trying to figure out what's either not allowing things to save or forcing things to revert on a client's machine.

Noticed it when I updated his anti-virus software (Norton). Would get a notice that the virus definitions had been updated but the program wouldn't reflect that (still showed an earlier date for the defs). After new installations of software/drivers, the screen resolution reverts to 800x600.

It's not critical that this gets worked out, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

It sounds like a driver/registry issue. Cleanup your registry with either Norton Sysworks, Mcrappy Software, or anything else pretty much that will do it for you. Reinstall your video drivers, see what happens.

It's a via-based mobo (can't remember which offhand) and a Geforce 2 GTS. Would run fine up until a few weeks ago. Trying to track down any changes he might have made.
