Display problems. NEED HELP

My grandfather is having some trouble with his display properties and I am all out of ideas. One day his display settings just switched to 16 colours and now he can't get back to 16bit. When he goes into the display properties 16 colours is the only option. The display driver is installed properly and I even had him update to the newest DirectX. Does anyone have any ideas. I'd really appreciate it🙂

Reinstall the drivers. It could say that it is installed properly, but just reinstall the drivers and it should work again.
 
From the beginning please. What operating system, video card, monitor etc...........
We can assume it is Win98. If so, then 1st check and see if the monitor is listed correctly. Choose Start|Settings|Control Panel|Display. Go to the Settings tab of the Display Properties window, choose Advanced|Monitor. If unknown monitor is listed, need to change it to the correct type. Click Change button to do so. Let us know so we can figure out the rest........
