Display problem

I'm having a hard time putting this issue into the correct terminology. But my problem lies with graphic quality on my display. When I'm watching a video or playing a game, certain colors will appear along the edge of objects/faces etc. Sometimes its a rainbow effect. Other times its a specific color, such as fluorescent blue on a cloudy sky background. It's very easy to see when panning in a game or watching a video. Its also visible on my browser icons that have a red coloration.

I don't know the correct terminology to describe this. I would appreciate any and all suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem. I tried to take a screenshot, but it doesn't show up in the image.

Does it look like glitter?

Has it been working and you just started having this problem?

Swap out the video cable with a known good cable. Bad cables can cause that type of problem.

Connect the monitor to another computer to see if it's the video card or monitor. If the problem follows the monitor on a different PC and cable then it's probably the monitor.

It doesn't resemble glitter. More like a rainbow. I've got a vidclip on Facebook, but I can't upload from this phone.

try one of the following:

1) reseating the graphics card
2) try it in another slot
3) reinstall the graphics driver
4) take a look at the graphics card, and make sure the fan is spinnning freely, and monitor the temps. .it may be running hot.....
5) wiggle the HDMI or VGA cable.. to ensure the connection is good.. if running HDMI, then try a VGA cable to rule that out as a possbile cause, etc.

I took the monitor and plugged it into another system, using that system's dvi cable and power. 'Voila. No issues.

So I plugged the faulty monitor back to its correct system, making sure the cable was screwed on tight. Seems to be working fine.

So the lesson is: check to make sure the cables are plugged in correct...First!
