Display Problem on an IBM ThinkPad 600e Laptop

My friend has an IBM ThinkPad 600e laptop and she installed Win Xp and then went back to Win 98. She had no problem doing that, but then the display is only showing in a box in the middle of the screen. It isn't taking up the whole display, which is used to previously in Win 98.

I immediately think video driver. So I download the video driver from IBM and load that up according to their instructions and it still won't work correctly. I did find a setting called Expansion under the display properties, and when I click it, it does expand the screen, but then the fonts are all messed up and it does not display correctly.

I'm not really familiar with laptops, so does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Matt

Do you have it set to 1024x768 16m color in the display properties?
(that is the FULL SCREEN default)

If that resolution is not an available option you have the wrong drivers installed.

It only goes up to 800x600. I downloaded the driver directly from the IBM website.

Is it possible that the video was upgraded (can you even upgrade the video in a laptop? - remember I'm not familiar with laptops at all).

Thanks
Matt

You might also have to install the monitor driver to get 1024x768 (or you can just set it to standard 1024x768)...your problem is exactly what happens when you have your laptop set to lower than the native resolution of an LCD.

no, i mean under the monitor tab, what monitor is specified? If you dont not have the proper monitor specified, then you will not be able to set your laptop to the proper 1024x768 resolution

Check in the DEVICE MANAGER.
Does it show the Display Driver as NeoMagic 256AV?

To elaborate on what johnjkr1 is trying to say to you,
make sure that the display is set to LCD, not CRT.

lilithtech is exactly right. Even if you set it to lcd, there are different LCD's you can set it to (800x600, 1024,768, etc). Depending upon which you select, this will limit the highest resolution you can set.

Yes, that NeoMagic shows up as the display adaptor, but for the Monitor, it says Laptop Display 800x600. I can't find any monitor driver on the internet and it didn't come with any cd's (she bought it used).

What to do now?

well, you found your problem. Simply switch it to laptop display 1024x768. Click the properties button in the monitor tab, click driver, click update driver, install from a specific location, dont search i will choose the driver to install, then uncheck show compatible hardware.

But doesn't that mean you have to know where the driver is located (you said, "dont search i will choose the driver to install").

Thanks you all so much. It finally worked. I did all that, but what was tripping me up was I would select IBM under Manufacturer and they didn't list her model number, but it was just under Standard display or something like that.

Thanks again.
