Tried to display the default VID on an i7-860
with the last version of Coretemp, but it hasn't been updated
since before the release of this CPU.

What program could display the VID of this chip?
I am assuming I would want everything on BIOS defaults
to test this?

u know vid isnt as important as it used to be on like the Q6600 series.

Also vid varies by your multi settings.

Having a lower multi will also yield a lower Vid most times.

So we dont really look at vid as much anymore.

Exactly as aigo said.

I have read comments from unclewebb (author of Realtemp) at the tech powerup forums that there is no longer a way to read the default VID of all Intel i-series chips from the chip, so it is unlikely there will ever be a piece of software that will do this again.

OK, great, thanks.
Won't worry about checking VID.

However, comparing the Xeon equivalent of
this i7-860, the X3460 I think, wouldn't you expect
a lower VID on it? Otherwise, what would you be getting
for buying the server part?

Use CPU-Z to check the VID also you can read it in the BIOS.
