display corruption seemingly

Hi all first time post on these forums so go easy, sorry I posted in the tech help section but this seems more appropriate

My specs are as follows

Opty 146 CACJE @ 2.8
Artic Freezer CPU Cooler
4X 512 3200 Micron RAM
X800xt ICEQ Cooled
DFI UT Ultra Lan Party 939 Mobo

I have had my system overclocked at this for the past year with no problems or crashes with encoding, demanding games etc
Then all of a sudden this appears on my screen without warning yesterday:

Initially I assumed it must be a graphics problem so swapped my x800xt for an old 9800Pro. However the problem persisted. There were no beep error codes, in fact in the background the system seems to startup like normal.
I have since cleaned all the dust off any of the components and reset the CMOS via removing the battery. However the problem still persists. Is this a motherboard AGP slot problem, or something else? Any advice anyone could give me would be most appreciated as I am at a loss!

Regards

What is it then that starts up like normal?

Reset the bios via the jumper on your mobo. This way it will go to its defaults. It may be that you OC'ed your system too long and it has now shown ill affects.

Sounds like he reset it by removing the CMOS battery.

Your MB has two options for dealing with resetting.
1. Safe Boot
and
2. CMOS
I would unplug the PS from the wall and try both options. 😉

Something's fried. I would have said GPU, but you replaced that, so I'm thinking you'll be shopping for a new motherboard or processor.

yeah am thinking that since I have tried the DFI street method of cold booting and that hasnt worked either. May well be time to go pci-express however id like to avoid that expense for the minute. Im unsure whether its the processor or mobo thats gone and without a spare 939 mobo or processor to trial and error with has anyone got any inkling as to which is liklier given the symptoms and the fact I can actually hear it boot into windows despite not being able to see anything?

Do you have access to a straight PCI video card you could try?
Both your AGP cards are ATI. So if the driver was corrupted, it could be messing with both of them.

Yeah, but the driver doesn't even come into play at POST. It's just writing to character memory.

Still, the PCI card idea is a good one if the OP has one lying around.

OP, if you're sure it is booting into Windows successfully then it is not the processor. More likely something related to the AGP interface, since I'm thinking problems with either the proc or the bus would keep Windows from booting successfully.

Strongly suspect graphics card RAM. Occasionally see this problem with an older office machine (333 Celeron) runing an ATI Rage 128, on which the problem comes & goes. Both your graphics cards are older, so may be considered "high mileage". I would begin w/a new graphics card, or one with significantly fewer hours of use. Good luck.

going to try and borrow a pci gpu tomorrow and try that. as for the current AGP cards, the x800xt works ok in another machine so not sure if thats the problem. if it is AGP bus on the board then that'll mean a new pci express board and new GPU.. great, the boards only a year old as well any other ideas?

If either card works consistently in another box, could it be a heat issue?
