Disney is readying another launch of sci-fi adventure movie "Flight of the Navigator."

Brad Copeland is writing the remake, which is being produced by Mandeville partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.

The 1986 original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. NASA scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family.

The movie grossed only $17 million when it was released but was later rediscovered on VHS, becoming a cult hit.

John Hyde, who executive produced the first one, steps into the same role for the new version.

Mandeville's senior vp Albert Page will help oversee development and exec produce. Kristin Burr is overseeing for Disney.

Copeland, repped by UTA, wrote "Wild Hogs" for Disney and is writing "Nightcrawlers" at Warners. He cut his teeth in the TV world, where he acted as writer-producer on "Arrested Development" and recently as writer and consulting producer on "My Name is Earl."

Disney-based Mandeville is readying the release of "The Proposal," the Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy opening June 19. The company is behind the Bruce Willis sci-fi action thriller "The Surrogates," which Disney scheduled for a Sept. 25 release, and is in pre-production on Relativity and Paramount's "The Fighter," a boxing pic which will see David O. Russell directing Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.

lazy hacks
That just reeks of ignorance.

Its got nothing to do with effort or energy. Throughout the 90's and early 2000's writers and producers were killing themselves trying to entertain America. Few things worked.
A lot of stuff that was predicted to be hugely successful ended up bombing horribly at the box office and didnt sell too many tapes or DVD's.
When they discovered people were spending more money on remakes and that rehashing old books, movies, and TV shows was more profitable, thats what they went for.
They are giving us remakes because thats what we (Americans) want!
Perhaps if you would buy a million movie tickets at a time, you would see more of what you want. In the meantime, the majority says they wanna see GI Joe and Star Trek and Hulk and Transformers all over again. Thats what they pay money for.

When you build up a billion dollar movie company you will probably figure out that if you wanna stay in business, you produce what sells, not what you think is good.

Yeah or a remake of something... a bit older? I mean cmon flight of the navigator is hardly old enough to justify a remake yet, give it another 10 or so years.

They could use the concept and make something similar. But to remake this classic, WTF!

I'd rather sit through a week-long marathon of Uwe Boll films, followed by a selection of Uwe's favorite movies, with Uwe sitting next to me giving commentary, than see movie companies continually rape my childhood and remake movies. I don't care as much about making live action versions of cartoons... that's pretty cool because it's not quite the same... but like... Karate Kid... this... fuck it all... why don't they just go down the IMDB top 250 every couple of years and remake those.

Old movies that are good are good because you take them in the context of the time they were produced... a remake of Flight of the Navigator would play out like a shitty version of an episode of X-Files or a movie that plays on Sci-Fi at 3 in the morning...

At first I got a little excited...then realized that there is no way a new movie could come close to the original. The movie is simply a classic, with a large dose of nostalgia.

I'll accept it, but ONLY if they have Paul Ruebens do the voice for the ship's computer again

"I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I? HUH HUH!"

No, they just take the easiest way out....why bother trying something new, it's too hard.

i remember watching it when i was a kid, but well, it probably hasnt aged well. pretty goddamned cheesy by todays standards.

Blame the success of "Escape to Witch Mountain" for Disney dusting off its old 70s/80s films in the attic.

Escape to witch mountain, karate kid, and now flight of the navigator.

GAH!!! The first two are remake CRAP! Stop with the horrible remakes. I don't mind new plot idea on old stuff to fix or improve, like the new versions of batman. I HATE when a classic is made into crap. Flight of the navigator can not be remade better than the original.
