Disney to (finally) lose copyright to Mickey Mouse and become public domain. Surprised they didn't try to extend it (again) under Trump

Only their specific graphical representations, which are generally not close to the earlier and more original versions.

I don't like Disney. Haven't since the late 70s, early 80s when their formula changed. Go back to the days of Charlie the Lonesome Cougar and I'll be fine with them. They never should have been allowed to buy some of the other media ventures. I think their parks and cruise line should be a completely separate company from the film production company.

Don't forget Thor (and friends), Hercules (and friends), and other historical figures/myths converted into US Govt-defended IPs.
They don't own those stories or characters, just their derivatives of them.

Look, we are talking about a specific depiction of a mouse with a specific name.

Let Disney have it.

Give your mouse neko ears or something. It really doesn't matter.

Nope, like patents the trade off for guaranteed exclusivity for a period of time under copyright is that eventually other people get to use it and build on top of it. The original goal of copy rights was bastardized beyond belief in the 20th century. This is a good very small first step to reestablishing there are actual limits to copyrights.

Frankly rolling the time period back to something like patents is more important now that so much of our world depends on software that is locked behind copyright protections.

Was surprised at the time that Alexei Sayle got away with this
