Disney Booting Up 'Toy Story 3'
Tue Nov 16, 2004 12:47 PM ET

By Sheigh Crabtree and Gregg Kilday
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Walt Disney Studios is actively proceeding with a second sequel to Pixar Animation's "Toy Story" franchise, a move that could make it more difficult for the two companies to extend their rocky relationship.

Disney is in the process of setting up a digital animation facility in Glendale -- not far from the digs of its bitter rival DreamWorks Animation -- that will be used for the production of "Toy Story 3."

While Disney has the rights to do sequels to "Toy Story," it has held off from doing so in the past, in part in deference to Pixar CEO Steve Jobs and executive VP John Lasseter, both of whom haven't wanted to lose control of the characters.

But with Pixar announcing earlier this year that it would end its distribution relationship with Disney following the 2005 release of the Lasseter-directed "Cars," Disney CEO Michael Eisner and studio head Dick Cook have signaled their determination to bring Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the gang back to the big screen.

The project falls under the aegis of David Stainton, president of Walt Disney Feature Animation. Andrew Millstein, who headed the company's now-shuttered animation facility in Orlando, also is involved and has begun the process of recruiting animation heavyweights from rival animation studios and effects shops.

Neither Disney nor Pixar would comment.

Nice job Eisner, way to completely piss away a chance to negotiate a new deal with Pixar.

Pixar and Disney had fallen out quite a while ago. Basically, it boiled down to the fact that Toy Story 2 didn't count towards Pixar's original contract of producing six pictures that would be distributed under the Disney name. This was complicated because originally TS2 was supposed to be direct to video but once they started it and got all of the original voice actors back they realized that it could be a theatrical release. Somewhere in the legal mumbo-jumbo along the way, it turned out that it didn't count toward the contract. Hence why they are doing Cars.

Ugh, that will be lame.

Although I doubt Disney had any shot at a new deal with Pixar.

Eisner is on his way out in 05 or 06, finally. With him gone it could have gotten done.

With this POS at least well into production by then, Disney would either have to eat whatever had been spent and shelve the production or go ahead and finish. I doubt it would be the former.

I wonder if this is a parting shot at Jobs.

If Disney's execs were less greedy they could have kept Pixar onboard.

This is going to be lousy. Hopefully they won't get Tom Hanks and Tim Allen onboard and it will be a massive financial disaster, but that's probably wishful thinking.

why is disney and pixar parting ways? wait...was the incredibles a disney movie?

Disney's CEO managed to screw up the renegotiation with Pixar. The original contract is up after Cars.

Disney owns the rights to all the Pixar films made under the contract

I thought that TS2 ended well and it should be left at that. They made it clear that "Andy is growing up but we're going to stick around as long as we can." I can't see how another one could really work well without getting cheesy. Maybe they'll pull a Karate Kid and have it be some new kid.

pixar is awesome... disney will rue the day.

Fixed

lol

btw... I have an aunt who used to work for Disney and she says that, as a company at least, they suck the big one.

Everyone know sthat Pixar is the one that made those films and Disney jsut distributed them and took the cash. Pixar is continuing to do awesome with it's own films and DIsney is going down the tank. And it's pretty much all due to Eisner. Hopefully he'll get booted out sometime soon...

That is basically it.

Eisner really has done a huge disservice to the company shareholders.

pixar is better off w/o disney... they just reap the profits from pixar's blockbusters.

There are benefits to Pixar's films being distributed by Disney. Up to this point, Buena Vista was arguably the most powerful distribution company in the industry.

Though now several other companys will be lined up at the prospect of inking a deal with Pixar.

Doesn't Pixar lease its animation rendering software to other producers? If so, they already have a few friends in the business that definitely wouldn't hesitate to hook up.

Fox, Warner Brothers, Sony, Paramount, oh hell basically everyone is likely drooling at the possiblity of distributing Pixar's film.

That is why Disney's actions are so retarded. They are throwing away a gold mine because Pixar, justifiably, wants a larger share of the pie.

IMO cars look like sh!t, and I think pixar is doing a half assed job with it just to satisfy the 6 film requirement

pixar sucks... disney will rule the day.

dude what crack are you on? pixar has consistently produced quality movies that children, adults and critics love.

heck toy story 2 won the golden globe for best comedy picture way back whenever that was.

toy story 3 unfortunately i see going straight to video since i'm hoping beyond belief hanks, allen, ratzenberger, etc won't do the film unless pixar is there. it would be such a disservice to those characters.

and they need to find a new slinky dog since his voice actor died.

I have faith in Disney to take the place of Pixar and make an entertaining Toy Story 3. I mean after all its the company that gave us great children films like Aladdin and Mulan and Lion King.
