I currently own Diskeeper Pro Premier 2008 and I just saw that the upgrade to 2009 is $60. What I want to know is if this software is even worth it? Do I NEED defragmenting software? I was reading that Vista's defragmenter is actually sufficient.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Why not free version defraggers? You can find them to defrag normal files as well as the registry.

* Auslogics Registry Defrag
* Auslogics Disk Defrag
While you're there, you might as well grab Auslogics System Information utility.
It wouldn't help you if you built your system and knew the specifications.
But if you're the "tech support" for your friends and family, it would help identify components quickly. :thumbsup:
 
A defrag program is a defrag program. The only real advantage Diskeeper had was the ability to automatically run the defrag on a schedule. Vista's can do that, so paying for a defragmenting program like Diskeeper is mostly pointless. There are some people who would argue that the entire concept of defragmentation helping with performance is almost entirely placebo. I wouldn't spend $60 on a program in this case.

One situation where I see defragging as being important is on my HTPC.
I constantly add and remove huge files.

Even still, you could just use Vista's (if you are using Vista that is) built in defragger right? It doesn't do any better job does it?

The partition that I torrent to is 95.93% fragmented according to xfs_db and it has had 0 affect on performance as far as I can tell. Watching a movie isn't an I/O intensive task and any decent player will cache some of the file so even if I/O lags a little bit it won't be affected.

I use XP Pro on that PC. Sure I can use the default defragger, but Auslogics is very fast and does some clean-up before defragging.
The price is right! :thumbsup::laugh:

OK, I'll play devils advocate and say that Diskeeper really is a good product and worthwhile. It does do some things that others including the freeware products don't. That said, there is no real reason to go chasing upgrades for it. From what I've seen, there seems to be little difference between the 2007, 2008, and 2009 versions. When I went from XP64 to vista 64 I upgraded to the 2007 version just to get Vista support. but since you already have 2008, there is no point in upgrading to 2009.

As to everyone suggesting you go with a freeware program, many of those are good too - but they are not better than the diskeeper 2008 you already have. Now, if you didn't already own something, then checking out the free stuff would be worthwhile to see if it does what you need. but given that you already have diskeeper 2008 pro premier - just stick with what you have.

I installed a hardware memory cleaner on my computer. A button on the front starts the cleaning process, and about 30" later, it's finished :^P
