This has been happening to me a ton lately. When i go to defrag using diskeeper it never gets passed 20% and then just freezes. I formated the computer and then it was fine for a couple days and then one day i went to defrag and it got stuck at 12%. Every time i restart it gets stuck at the same percentage.

Can anyone help me out? im getting stressed out and pretty much fed up with this. My computer seriously needs a defrag.

It might be a good idea to empty your Temp files
and the Prefetch files first

C:\Docs & Settings\User ID\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Windows\Prefetch

Note: I use Diskeeper 9 Pro .. it usually slows down a bit
at around 30% or so then after about 5 mins it moves along
This is on a 120GB Drive ... I think the new Diskeeper 10
may be more bloated .. Also, if you haven't defragged in a
while it will take longer ... Some AV Programs need to be
disabled for DK to run smoothly

tried all that. I don't know why it freezes at the same % every time. Something is up. Maybe one of my drives in the raid is dying? I'm about to give up lol

Have you tried running chkdsk /f---which will require a reboot to run? To see if you have some screwed up files.

Just an idea, but Diskeeper offers a couple of options, both of which may be of help

1): Make sure your MBR is of a sufficient size .. Diskeeper can resize as desired

2): You may want to have Diskeeper run a Boot Time Defragment of the drives
If you do this, it is a good idea to Image the System with Ghost or TruImage first
just in case the boot time defrag messes something up

I've done the MBR thingy and it always says its unsufficient size and when i go to make it sufficient its some ridiculous amount of megabytes it needs. But after i defrag the health is always green.. and this is leaving the MBR the same size. I haven't tried the boot time and im afraid to. The checkdisk did come up with a lot of errors so maybe i do have to format again. Wierd how i just formated though.... i hope my drives are ok.

If you ran a check disk with /f and got a bunch of errors, I'd say go and do it again with the /r switch instead. The defrag software might be hanging up on a bad sector on the drive.

There's also the FIXMBR command which can be run from the windows recovery console if it is a MBR issue.

Run Spinrite or your HDD mfg's diag tools on your hard drives ASAP.

well at least we're getting somewhere now... i ran spinrite and after the first 10 minutes it found something and gave it a red U which means unrecovered. I'm guessing i got blad sectors... what should i do? Look for the serial number and see if my drives are on warranty or is there another program i can try?

Also im on raid so should i split the raid and run them seperate to find out which drive is dying?
