Disk Thrashing Process

Sometimes, shortly after my screen saver turns on, my hard drive will start thrashing wildly. Every time I try to see what process is causing this activity, the process dies (so I can't view it Task Manager). I'm running Windows XP Pro, BTW.

Is there any way to log the activity in Task Manager? Or find out what is causing my disk to thrash so wildly? I'm curious as to what might be causing this.

Sure it's not just XP's built-in indexing service, or background defragmenter operating?

McAfee VirusScan used to run a full system-scan when the screensaver kicked on. Not sure if newer versions still do that.
