DISK READ ERROR

Hey all,

I just put together a new computer.

Below are the specs.

Thermaltake 430watt TR2
Gigabyte M61P-S3
AMD 5600+
2GB OCZ EL DDR2 800
Sapphire x1950xt
LiteOn DVD rom
LiteOn DVD burner
3 hard drives:
-500gb seagate barracuda
-250gb samsung
-80GB seagate

when trying to load the OS i can see the harddrives...even with xp without loading additonal drivers....i get the base os for the install on the drive, it restarts...then

I get a disk read error....doesnt matter which drive i use...all give the same result....

what could be my potential issue here.....

memtest 1 pass through gave good to go on teh ram...

Try installing Windows while you only have your boot drive connected, then connect the others after getting Windows set up and updated. Are any of those drives using Parallel ATA (40-pin ribbon cable) or are they all Serial ATA?

uhm i have only sata drives....i tried goin between drives one at a time on different cables ports even without the dvd drive just to try to boot from the drive...not sure whats up here but i think its mobo setting?

If you look in the BIOS at the Advanced BIOS features > Hard Disk Boot Priority and the boot-device list below it, does that all look right? It's set to boot from the SATA hard disk drive in both sections? The NV SATA RAID option in Integrated Peripherals > Serial-ATA RAID Config is disabled, right?

This could be caused by a bad power supply or bad RAM. Motherboard could be bad also. I have seen people get problems with some motherboards loading XP without SP2. I would recommend connecting only one drive when installing. The drive controller on the motherboard could be bad or chipset overheating or something odd with the motherboard.

you're going to need to press F6 when you install XP to install the SATA drivers.

so i got it somehow to work...dont know how...

BUT i have vista installed for about 4 hours before i noticed that the drive was seriously just locking up...during normal operation...shut down....updates....and the hd led stays lit...what is wrong with this .... i also just swapped out the main hd for a WD so lets hope this helps to alleviate the problem.....only the one drive is hooked up

Vista has indexing and SuperFetch which use the HDD in the background on a routine basis, and are generally beneficial. If you mean that you have unexpected disk activity when Vista is running, those could be the reasons.
