ok, the problem is that i was getting ready to defrag the other day and it gave me an error. I then restarted and as booting up, right after the post screen, before windows ever starts loads, it read:

DISK READ ERROR
press ctrl + alt + del to restart

computer specs:

cheap mobo
xp 1800+
voodoo 3000 pci vid card
512mb pc2100 ram
Sony 48X cd writer
20 GB Seagate HD

(i know vid card is outdated, but it works, the HD is the question).

also, i tried reinstalling windows and right after the inspecting hardware configuration, it goes to a black screen and stays there. Is there a way i can make a boot disk off of a CD so i can at least format the thing? (i dont have a floppy and would rather not buy one.) thanks guys

Wrong forum - but sounds like your drive might be just about hosed.

Download Seagate's diagnostic software, and run the full disk integrity test (or whatever they call it). If it comes up with any diagnostic codes, check your warranty and/or RMA the thing.
