This is my second post, first real find. It's just a little hard drive that plugs into the USB port. I thought these things were cool as heck the first time I saw one. It's just a little hard drive, and requires no drivers for any OS after Win98. Perfect for the student without a printer (like me, holding out for a laser). I can just throw a file on it, and carry it to a lab.

With the 25% off deal @ Dell, its only $32.21! Haven't seen a good one for any cheaper....

Link!

It's not really a "little hard drive." It is more similar to compact flash or smartmedia memory, in that there are no moving parts.

I know. But If I called it flash memory, people wouldn't know what it was.

<< Bubble memory! >>

What?

Be very careful what you buy. So far I have seen versions that need no drivers, require a driver from a cd or floppy (defeats the portability idea) and I believe there is one with the drivers on the key itself? Not too sure.

Check out Putty - it is a one file download and only one file required to run (does put some stuff in the registry though but not much). So I just put it on my website and access it when I want to SSH in (ie in browser go to http://my.website.com/putty.exe, download, execute, SSH in). It's like > 200kb and free too!

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

Not as many options as other programs but in a pinch this rocks (plus not having to install it is a big big plus). SecureCRT is another nice one to have but not for what I do above.

edit: looks like newest version is 220kb, still dang small and much easier than carrying around an SSH program :)

The DiskonKey version has drivers built into WinMe and Win2000. However, on my WinME system, which I already have a Smartmedia USB reader installed on, I had a lot of problems getting it to work and they recommended installing the Win98 drivers from their site instead, which did solve the problem.

The other thing to consider is that there are also 16 and 32mb versions, and 64mb supposedly on the way (or maybe out by now, I have not looked lately) and those would be much more practical than the 8mb version. On the other hand, these things are very cool -- I ordered a couple for work and some senior management types saw them and made me order more for them!

I have both the 8 mb DiskonKey and 16 ,32 and 64mb Thumbdrives. All work well with the exception of having a smartmedia usb reader installed. I had to uninstall the smartmedia drivers( regedit) and install the usb storage device drives first. However they work great for transfering video drivers etc to other computers. The 8mb ibm is good because of the key ring the thumbdrives don't have that feature but they hold more and are much smaller. I bought a bunch to get better pricing and sold some to my IT dept. PM or email me if you have any questions about them.

Yeah, I saw those there also.
I figured we might be safer buying from Dell, and Since Eb*y links aren't allowed....

Picked up a 256 MB Pendrive from Royal not too long ago. Can't say much about them as a vendor, but the product is great.

No drivers needed on Win2k, WinME, Mac 8.5, and works on some unixes too. Been very slick. http://www.pendrive.com works for info on the product.
