I need a lite, free, disk copier.
Its a 500GB, 20 of it is a system drive and the rest is a data partition
I want to copy it to a 2TB drive make the system drive 20 gb and leave the extra disk space for the data partition

any ideas?

I am getting Acronis now, do I plug the source and the destination disk into my other workstation or image then copy image to destination?

Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition or Seatools (which is based on Acronis). Both are free, both are great. I'm sorry if you have an oddball HD that isn't WD or Seagate.

acronis easy migrate
acronis (any higher tool)
each give 30 day trial. the clone tool is in every product above including easy migrate so install one you haven't used before and go.

free and 100% legal

Any method works. You can leave the source drive in place, and attach the destination drive. Acronis will reboot the system and clone the drive outside of Windows and then you're good to go.

The best way is to use the bootable CD that Acronis creates and don't involve the OS at all. You get a much better GUI and less chance of error that way.

If you do a "As Is" cl;oning, it will copy only the size of the source drive and leave the rest of the space you mentioned.

for those free things, do both source and dest have to be same HDD make?

Acronis WD edition just needs to read that a WD drive is installed, you do not have to use the WD drive, but it does a check before you can use this free version.
