Disk checking software

Are there any good alternatives to ScanDisk? I have an old hard drive in an external enclosure that has taken a bit of a beating. I need to look for bad sectors to make sure I can trust it with some data.

Any suggestions?

I find that it's either difficult for it to tell me if I have bad sectors, or else it doesn't even tell me at all.

In Windows 7 it said "1 bad block was moved to the bad blocks file".

Most drive manufacturers have a utility available for download from their site that will check their drives for bad sectors and other problems.

It means that block is bad and has been marked to not be used by the OS. But I agree with you, bad way of telling you.
