DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

Steve

Lifer
A new motherboard arrived last night (a Foxconn 748K7AA) so I began to install Windows XP (with SP1a). This was on a 40GB IBM drive (yes, a Deathstar, but with the firmware fix applied) that previously had Windows 2000 on it. Also, this drive also had only 9GB partitioned (I was going to do something with the rest but I changed my mind).

The install went okay, once it was done I popped in my SP2 CD, and once that was done I visited Windows Update and got everything critical plus a few optional. Reboots in between everything as per normal. Only this error began after removing the Windows CD and starting the SP2 CD.

On that reboot, starting up again, I get a POST message:

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

and the only way I can get the system to boot is if I leave my Windows CD in the drive. I ignore the "Press any key to boot from CD....." message and Windows simply starts up. Otherwise I can't get past the error message.

For the record, I also have a pair of SCSI cards, an LSI 20860 and an LSI 8953U. I've tried booting to recovery console and doing fixboot+fixmbr but that didn't work. I can also try updating my IDE drivers, and as a last resort repair install or all-out reinstall, but I'm asking for any other suggestions. Maybe some BIOS or SCSI firmware setting...?

I've tried several boot orders, with the hard drive as 1, 2 or 3. Doesn't change this behavior thouhg. I can't see what number it's at right now as I'm at work.

Set the hard drive as the first boot device in your BIOS. Make sure that your hard drive is the primary master on IDE1.

Problem solved! Turns out I had to go into my SCSI card's BIOS, and under "Boot Adapter List" I had to set "Next Boot" to Off.

Hello All,

New to forum. I have THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM...except I don't have a SCSI that is interfering and can't figuire out what it is.

On reboot (soft or hard reboot), I get a POST message:

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

and the only way I can get the system to boot is if I leave my Windows CD in the drive. I ignore the "Press any key to boot from CD....." message and Windows simply starts up. Otherwise I can't get past the error message.

I have tried all the mothods previously mentioned, including setting up different boot orders. I have even disconnected my other drive (SATA) with only the DVD Drive and the Hard Disk drive on the system and it gives me the same error. I also re-installed Windows, but the same thing happens. Even when I try to manually choose the boot device, it gives me the same error... except when the Windows CD is in the drive.

Here's my setup:

Abit NV8 Mobo
40GB IDE WD Drive (C🙂
Pioneer DVD Drive
40GB SATA WD Drive (Disconnected for troubleshooting purposes)
2 x 512 Kingston ValueRam
Athlon 3200
GF 7800 GT
Thermaltake Power Supply (420W)

Please help if you can.

Hello, thanks for the reply. I tried disabling all SATA bios settings that I could see. I also had the SATA drive unplugged (from the mobo). I performed a chkdsk, as well as updating to the latest bios for the mobo. Still the same problem. My next solution is to completely format everything and install my OS on the SATA drive in hopes that it will boot from it automatically.

I've also noticed that the posting process is EXTREMELy slow... instead of instanenously seeing the drives, it takes a while. I've also changed the IDE cable on the current drive, but still the same issue. Any other tips you may have is appreciated.

Slow POST sounds like BIOS is looking for something to boot from but can't find it. I would set your BIOS(es) to defaults, then carefully examine every setting and disable bootable items you don't want to boot from. You might find something you're overlooking.

Thanks sm8000! I decided to look into "slow post" and found out what my problem was. I'm using WD 40GB drive by its self on a cable... apparently, while there is no 'Single' Drive jumper setting on the Disk, putting it on Master was what was both slowing down POST as well as not letting it boot. I took the jumper out, and everything now workks fine!!

Thanks all for your feedback.

I have the same problem. This computer is newly built, let the windows xp install etc... then I get the sign that says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER ... but then my keyboard shuts off and so does my mouse. Could this be a problem with the bios?
