Sometimes I get this error quite frequently when booting. I have to restart about three times before it works. I suspect my hard drive and ran DFT and a SMART tool but both came up negative.

Is the signal of impending death for my Maxtor (cue Maxtor haters)?

It could be something as simple as a lose molex connector, or pin connection in the molex connector, or too many devices run off the same branch on your PSU. A poor performing PSU could also be the culprit. Anything that causes the boot drive from being detected on bootup..poor cabling for another example.

In a rare few cases the computer boots faster than the drives spin up, causing you to have to reboot hot.

It could be a bad HDD, but look at all the varibles first.
