Doesn't make any sense anyways...because dishwashers are DESIGNED to clean the crud off. Only a small number of situations that actually require you to pre-wash a dish and it usually involves specific foods.
I rinse them off first but I don't wash them.

Why, my machine has a "sanitary cycle" heats the water up super hot, way hotter than you could ever do by hand..

No, you don't need the water to be super hot. I am talking about the dishwater detergents. They tend to have some extra crap in it to scrub the hell out of your dishes.

I would not trust baby bottles to that.

For when my dishes are really bad I load up some powder into the main compartment and put a tablet in the prerinse compartment (it's part of the same compartment except it has cracks so when I close the door powder can come out... but not the tablet) Then I'll throw in some loose powder directly in the machine like the prewash does.

When that main compartment opens it releases not only a full load of powder, but a tablet as well. I only go to that extreme when I made a spegatti sauce or something since those pots can require a pretty serious scrub.

So your afraid of the bottles wearing out prematurely or soap residue on them?..

I just started using Nufinish with the red "powerball" in the middle, best I've tried yet. Some of the powders would occasionally cake on the inside of the dispenser cup so I quit using powder..

more the residues. The tactile feel of the dishes that comes out of my dish washer is different than the ones I hand wash and I can smell chemicals on the dish washer ones. Not a big fan.

my wife likes to put my knives with brass rivets in the dishwasher...

If the dishwasher needed everything to be rinsed off first, I wouldn't have bothered buying one.

Just don't put stuff in with giant gobs of food on it.

My dishwasher detergent of choice: Cascade Complete. It can clean off damn near anything, with the exception of stuff that's been burned onto cookware. That usually has to come off with a scouring pad and Bar Keeper's Friend abrasive soap.

Actually, that's not quite true. While some companies have spent money on engineering dishwashers to clean better, the vast majority "engineer" dishwashers for ease of construction and to decrease the cost of materials. Then, if the prototype is particularly horrid at cleaning, the design gets tuned til it does an adequate job. The same goes for your refrigerator, stove, oven and every other appliance.

Check your machine, it may not be rinsing properly, I've never seen or smelled any kind of residue from mine..

Our dishwasher sucks, I have to pre-scrub our dishes before I run it.

If you have to wash your dishes before putting them in the DishWasher, then you should probably go buy a new DishWasher as it's not doing its job...

I use the packs, they work great.
It all depends on the dishwasher. Some are good some suck.
I just replaced a ~20 year old GE with brand new Bosch.
It's like night and day.

My dogs take care of the pre-washing stuff.
:)
It was cats for me. That abrasive tongue of theirs, and a strong appetite for the special and awesome human foodstuffs that came from the forbidden countertop, were quite effective for pre-cleaning cookware.
