dishwasher leaves fine dirt stuck to everything

If you have one of those air vent things on the sink next to the faucet, take off the cap and dissect it a bit to see if it's clogged with gunk or linty looking stuff. Mine was doing the exact same thing and I pulled out a slimey linty mess from the air vent thing and it fixed the problem. 🙂

ok i'll try that next

Clean the diswasher. Also run it empty a couple times with vinegar and soap water, like when you buy a new washer.

air vent looks clean, dishwasher looks kinda clean, but i'll try it empty.

can i run it with CLR in it?

Never heard of anyone running CLR in it, but I don't see why not. Just read the label warnings.

I use a cup of CLR about once a month in an empty dishwasher through the whole cycle and it keeps things very clean. I have very hard water also, so I feel you knocking😉

after poking a hanger down into the vent to see if its clogged i think i blocked the drain somehow because now all the water from the drain is coming straight up and out of that vent

Well, sounds to me like the vent was clogged then 🙂
You've correctly diagnosed the problem that you used to have.

Does your dishwasher build up enough pressure on the drain so that if you cover the vent it'll push the obstruction through to the drain?

You did reassemble it before running the dishwasher, right?
