I've got Dish with the dual-tuner 622 receiver. I couldn't be happier.
The response times are great when changing channels and using the on screen guide.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Would you mind telling me what you pay a month? Did you have to pay for the DVR or installation?

The offer I just signed up for was no charge for the 622 (a few weeks ago it was $200). Dunno what taxes will amount to, but it showed the bill as being a few cents shy of $50 for the Top 200 package plus the HD package.

Interesting...but I wish they would actually state which channels they would be offering. They are just saying capacity...and not how many they will actually end up with...and I fear a lot of those will be PPV channels which don't really interest me.

At the moment there isn't enough programming to add too many channels. That's why they say they are adding the capacity. There just isn't 150 HD channels out there right now. With that said, I have Directv HD and I love it.

Most of those new channels will be local HD feeds. With HD ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX it doesn't take many markets to fill 150 channels.

Sweet. That is about what I was expecting. I'm a little worried with the Customer Service comments regarding Dish...but I like the current programming and price over Direct TV...so I think I'm going to go with them. Need to talk to Charter about removing my current service.

Do you need a telephone line for Dish or Direct TV? I haven't had a home phone for years. I plan on still getting my internet access through Charter...so that should not change...is that enough?

There used to be an additional $5-6/mo charge if you didn't have a land line, but I didn't see anything about that when I signed up. That was one of the many things keeping me from switching (haven't had a land line since '01)

no, you do not need the land line phone. The phone is only used for ordering PPV. I have to do it online instead of on screen.....big whoop....3 minutes longer

BTW...this is with DirecTV

As a one time customer of charter, dish and Directv, i'll have to recommend cable first, then DISH and do not recommend using Directv.

Charter offers no HD in my area, and signal quality sucks. Hence the Dish switch.

Charter sucks with their DVR. None of the normal cable channels are digital...so they already look crappy on the HDTV...then when the MOXI DVR gets done with its sub par conversion to a digital format...it even looks worse.

On top of that I've had numerous problems with the MOXI boxes failing and not retrieving the "guide" information rendering it essentially useless other than pausing (you can't record shows at all...scheduled or unscheduled). I've just gotten sick of it and their Customer Services complete ineptitude regarding it.

They do have a few HD channels...but nothing close to what Dish or DirectTV offer...so I'm pretty much sold on moving over to satellite.

I have a questino about Dish ...

I was looking at DirectTV or Dish for the fact that my cable sucks at my new apartment, and I can't even get HD with them. I also can't get HD OTA because my TV doesn't have a built in tuner.

Can you get local HD with Dish? I remember when my brother had DirectTV, he had to get a seperate antenna to get the local channels in HD because DirectTV did not offer the local channels in HD with their service. And I can't get OTA HD so I'm wondering if Dish offers the local HD.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with Dish, I just wanted to know this information too. Thanks.

<-- Have DirectTv. I regret it soooo badly. I would rather keep getting reamed by Comcast then to have to put up with this crap.

I've been happy with dish so far.

I just have the twenty dollar Dish package and am very happy with it. Had Direct TV at first and got too expensive for what little I watch.

Got to their website...they have a tool that shows you if you can get your local channels in HD. Also, the DVR receiver that i'm looking at will let you hook up an antenna to it to get local channels OTA if their current satellite service does not yet offer the channels over HD.

What problems are you dealing with?

I have DirecTV. I like it. A few problems like once my MTV got shut off. Jokes aside, they helped me get it back on track. Their online login/account management is buggy but it's all sorted out. I don't have any direct experience with Dish but everytime I see or hear about them, they just seem very low class to me. Like the ghetto sattelite network. Just my opinion.

Well, if you like HD supposedly DirecTV is adding more HD channels than anyone else, including cable.

It's the first time DirecTV ever announced something so early. So we'll see. As of now it's the only thing keeping me from switching to Dish.

Do you have a link to this info?

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=900034

Plus they have been bombarding TV stations with Back to the Future themed ads crowing about it for months.

They just launched some new satellites for more capacity.

Do you experience a delay when using the menu on your Directv HD receiver? I have two HD receivers at home and there's always a delay when going through the guide or the menus. It's annoying. 🙁
