Dish Network's Turbo HD or DirecTV?

Turbo HD

I just saw a commercial for this on Adult Swim. It's 100% HD and has over 100 channels. You can also get 1080p VOD on the DVR (which is a CNet Editor's Choice) they give you. It's $39.99/month for their Gold (Best) package.

The Gold package has all the channels I could ever want. I like it, but I'm curious to see your opinion about it.

Is DirecTV much better for the price? Also, is there a way to get DirecTV without the 24 month commitment.

Compare for yourself?

But the Dish TurboHD package is 55 channels of HD only. Not over 100 channels.

DirecTV will also be offering movies in 1080p FWIW

Honestly though, both are getting to be about on par with each other in regards to channels. Price, contract, and hardware is probably what you want to consider.

As a Dish HD subscriber . . . I have no real complaints. I got a letter in the mail with them advertising their new turbo HD . . . if i'm not mistaken . . .its more marketing than anything else. All they've really added is 1080P VOD . . . but it comes at a price per movie. The vip 722 HD DVR is really nice. . . I really like the interface and remote. . . works well for me. I don't know much about direcTV so can't help you there. . I'd imagine that you can't really go wrong with either and with such a compettitive market, prices should be comparable and it really comes down what DVR box/feature set you want.

New Dish HD subscriber and I'm generally happy. Make sure Dish has your locals in HD. I didn't find out my locals wouldn't be available in HD until February until after the upgrade and the 24 month commitment.

The major advantage for Dish is that 1 DVR can control two TVs. If you have four TVs that makes it a hell of a lot cheaper, both in start-up costs and in monthly price than Direct TV.

<<<<--- Direct TV Subscriber...

Deal breaker for me was Locals in HD.
The price by the time you make the packages similiar is about the same. Also if your interested in sports. Check out which season package goes with witch carrier.
If your into the NFL for example, you should probably go with direct..

I've had DishHD for about a year now. Generally, I'm pretty happy with it. Keep in mind that a huge percentage of the 100 HD channels are NBA and NHL channels that you may or may not watch.

I'm still mad at them for taking away MonstersHD 🙁

just upgraded my dish to hd a month ago. can't tell you how happy i am that i'm paying almost twice that new price for my service...

It's great! Been a happy Dish customer for 2 years now. One of the best services I've ever subscribed to. They're always adding free bells and whistes every few months.

It may not matter in the long term. Dish and Direct are in talks again about merging.

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - U.S. satellite-TV provider Dish Network Corp is weighing another attempt to merge with rival DirecTV Group Inc, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

No formal proposal has been made, but Dish executives and DirecTV representatives have had general discussions about the idea in recent months, the newspaper reported in its electronic edition.

On Monday Dish reported a loss in subscribers, which may prompt the company to consider "a major strategic shift" that could involve reviving attempts to combine with DirecTV, the newspaper said.

The two satellite broadcasters attempted a deal in 2001, when Dish tried to acquire DirecTV's then-owner Hughes Electronics Corp, but the efforts were abandoned due to regulatory opposition.

Dish Chairman and Chief Executive Charles Ergen thinks the regulatory and competitive environment may be more receptive for a Dish-DirecTV deal now, the newspaper said.

Dish and DirecTV could not be immediately reached for comment.

And Kung Fu HD... but at least now I have vintage hockey games in HD 😕

If you're close enough to the stations, the antenna pass-through for HD OTA works really well.

I signed up for Dish a week or two ago. Pretty unhappy with their general customer service, but the actual product seems fine.

My monster antenna on the roof could not pick all of them up....... I got some weird looks with my little 13 inch tv up on the roof trying to dial them in...

That was part of the reason why I left Dish and went to DirecTV. DirecTV has better customer service IMHO.

Well it seems Dish is a good deal. DirecTV is alittle to pricey for me and their rates and contracts confuse the heck out of me. That I don't watch sports. I'll pay $40 a month JUST for Discovery HD 😛. I'll be ordering Dish's Turbo HD when I get off work.

Can't wait to get away from my crappy cable company and their whole 3 HD channels.

What matters to me most is picture quality. Is this Turbo HD as bad as the HD I have seen on normal Dish? Are they the same channels?

From what I have seen, DirecTV's HD PQ is a bit better than Dish's

How so? Do you mean the artifacts when there is alot of action on the screen? PLEASE tell me they have fixed that by now!

Nope. And Dish is worse than DirecTV now because they still use Mpeg2 rather than 4 like DirecTV upgraded to. But DirecTV has artifacts as well.
