Discussion - id Software's New Game

Ok, so id is working on a new Intillectual Property (IP), we all know this. We all know that it's been in development for atleast a year and we have not see a single thing regarding it. My question is this:

Don't you think, no matter whatever this new game is, 90% of the gaming community is going to be disappointed by it (I'm not saying I'm one or not one of those people)? I mean, what could they possibily come up with that would blow us away. Because of the behemoths Quake and Doom...we're all so jaded and are expecting to be blown away from this next NEW product!

I doubt it will be about:
- Hell or demons
- A smart talking, funny ass protagonist (Duke and Serious Sam)
- Scientific Experiment gone wrong (HL)
- A black cop thats pissed (Sin)
- Medevil spooky stuff (Painkiller or Heretic)

....if they just make another awesome Sci-Fi FPS....there will be backlash from the community.....so, I guess I'm just thinking out loud.

I bet its Commander Keen

God, those games rocked. 😀

Up until 2 years ago, I still had the original floppy disks, but I had to copy them over to my hard drives to preserve them.

iD games don't interest me anymore. Quake was their last game worth buying, since then other Game Makers have far eclipsed anything made by iD. I wish they'd stop trying to Sell the crap they make. Just make the Engine then License it to others with Game Making talent for the win.

Then why did you come in here and open the floodgate? Now this thread is going to deteriorate into another "Doom 3 sucks" or "Doom 3 versus Far Cry versus HL2" thread.

Did I open a floodgate?

You initial response adds absolutely nothing to the topic in my thread.

I think it does, I'm rather Jaded afterall. 😉

For Pete's sake. Let's stay on topic 😛.

I don't know if it's possible to come up with mind blowing stuff like that anymore. We're all pretty jaded. Tough to say, but I bet you'd be "blown away" by HL2 if you played in 1988 right after you finished Wolfenstein 3D. I mean HL2 is a pretty incredible game in itself. What more can they come up with though? Photo realistic graphics? Trippy levels (like MP2 and Psychotoxic?), New ingame features, i.e: beserk, Slo-mo, time-shift? Actual emotion wrenching games, similar to movies? (Some of the gaming mags are saying that PREY is going to have such a story it's going to hit peoples emotions - I just don't see it preliminarily, but you never know....).

You figure if the gaming industry can continue to improve on the graphics and add another ingame feature here or there, people are always going to continue to buy. But I agree. What could they possible come up with that would "revolutionize" gaming?

At risk of hijacking this thread (that know one seems to know about the op anyway). Games that have revolutionized lately. Vamp the masquarde bloodlines for rpg, Far Cry for environment, HL2 for sp fps over all experience, BF2 for mp fps. So where do we go from here? Ok better video, sure. Multiplayer fps seems at a wall on the subject of internet lag at the moment, mmorpg about the story (I'm just about to try to find an EVE getting started link). Of course the best games are those that you didnt see coming (mp stealth?). Any way, what do you see or want to see? I guess my ideal would be a MMORPG with a story and environment => vamp (have I mentioned that I really like this game?). Where would you like to see the gendre head next or over time?

Maybe that's id's problem ... they feel they have to make some "revolutionary" leap every time. They spend so much time in the attempt that when the release happens it's just too late as time has pasted it by...... sad but often true.
I just hope they make something fun, damn fun!!!

No offense, but I believe there is TONS that can still be done with the genre. I realize that for a lot of gamers it is hard to see all the possibilities because of all the repeat work in the past. I havn't really felt burnt by anything Id has created. Quake2 wasn't that great, but I played it for several months, Quake3 offered absolute tons as far as the game and modding community went and really had great 3rd party games also. Then Doom3 really didn't offer as much gameplay as previous offerings, but I still enjoyed the graphics for what they were.

My guess is that Id really opened the door to a lot of new ideas in Doom3 but ran into a lot of walls between what they could do and what they couldn't do and still keep it a game about a mars base. I'm willing to bet they want to do a game with the picture in picture video, a lot of fun physics and cool shadow graphics, but they want to get away from dark atmospheres and cliche monsters. Somewhat like Prey is doing, but with a new engine instead of the Doom3 engine.

I think it is a great time for games and the FPS genre is still only an infant. I think the graphics and physics will continue to improve and as it does we will see a lot more possibilities thrown into a game. We see buzzwords thrown around now where developers say you can 'interact with anything' but that really isn't true yet.

You know, on a bit of a tangent, I hope someone makes a Doom4 or something to that extent, but does it right, true to the originals. Even after playing Doom3, it feels like I'm not satisfied with what I walked away with. I wanted a game where every map was a maze like "Tricks and Traps" and the game was less reality and more fantasy. If not Id, I hope someone pulls that off some day.

I think the direction that needs to be gone in FPS now is AI. STALKER sounds like its going this route. Lets face it, pretty graphics are a who cares feature now. They don't make games without good graphics anymore. They've got the cool physics engines, now they need NPCs that act believably.

At least, I know thats is what gets me excited about new games, the AI.

skace is right though, there's been so much cookie cutter copying in this genre its kind of hard to believe that there's anything else left to be done. But I think the reality is that developers tend to stick with what they know, and what they know works. There's tremendous pressure from publishers to put out a money maker, and that hoses innovation because innovation requires a lot of risk. When you're trying a new idea, it might not even be fun to play.

We're in a bit of a drought now too, a lot of the developers I considered real pioneers have vanished in the last few years. Looking glass, bullfrog...they were always doing weird genre busting stuff. They never made a ton of money on it though.

I don't know why we're looking to iD to innovate now though, iD hasn't done anything innovative since the original doom. They haven't gone outside their genre, and they haven't really done anything but update the graphics on the old doom formula. iD makes amazing graphics engines...but thats about it. Doom3 and Doom1 are both pretty much "shoot the monster, push the button, find the key".

I'm not sold on how much they've been working on this new game for the past year, they've had their hands on Xbox Doom, the Doom expansion, some new technology that Carmack's developed that will be used in Quake-ET, not to mention all of Carmack's rocket stuff.....

I have a guess though - along the lines of the rocket stuff, and for the most part still FPS - a new space game along the lines of the classic X-Wing Tie Fighter series. Just a guess.

Let's be honest, iD's innovations aren't in the gameplay arena, they are in engines - still, I've enjoyed their games quite a bit.

A lot of an Id developement cycle is just Carmack coding the game out. So he is always working on the next engine while the rest of the team does whatever. I'm not sure how much work Carmack has had to do on all the console ports.
