pay for rent at home? no

I am currently "away" for school, living in an apartment. All of my expenses kind of come from this vague glob of money that my parents' money, my own money, and the school's financial aid all go into. So in a way, my parents are paying for my rent, but not all of it, or they're paying for my school and I'm paying for my rent, or they're paying for my food and I'm paying for the school and the school's paying for my rent.... blagh.

But my parents would never make me pay for living at home, unless I was a lazy, jobless jackass who doesn't try to make any progress in life.

whats a sponger?

maybe like a mooch? i have no idea either. anyways, if it is to signify mooch, he's got it all wrong. that's just how asian families are, you take care of each other like that.

My kids started paying me a small amount of board when they were 16, it helped teach about how life costs money and put a stop to them doing things like leaving lights blazing in every room
and wasting food.I banked their cash and when each girl left home I wrote em a check :)

Like a big mooch. Take take take, but never give anything back.

Like the guy on the couch in Half Baked. :)

then that's just plain wrong... your family is suppose to help one another, i mean if you can't count on them, who can you count on?

Yes
$345 = $300 rent + $45 for the high-speed internet bill

I bought a house two weeks ago and will be moving out eventually.

Exactly how long would you think somebody should be allowed to sponge off their parents before they finally did have to kick in something? 18? 21? 30? 35? How long?

not to be racist, but i think that for the vast majority of chinese, japanese, korean, etc kids, you don't have to worry about that. many factors, including...

1.) asian parents are often somewhat intrusive, so kids will probably want to leave
2.) the kids would not allow themselves to sponge... it'd just be shameful

Well gopunk is right, if you cant count on your family who can you count on, my parents wouldnt let me work during school until i came to college where i was doing internships, i havent lived at home for the last 6 years. My parents have provided me with everything i have today, my education, my happiness, my morals, everything. At this point in their life they dont need my help finnacially but if they choose to retire early they can count on financial support from me without thinking twice about it (in fact i put money away every month just for them and i carry 3/4 million dollars in life insurance god forbid something happens to me, i know that they will be taken care of.). I'm far from a sponger. For most asian families responsibility doesnt end at 18 and kids dont just forget about their parents when they leave the house.

Then why on earth did you post in this thread?

To answer the question(s):
I'm 24, and I don't live at home (with my dad).

Just goes to show, different cultures have different ways of teaching discipline, responsibility and self respect. There are quite a few constituents of Hillary and Ted who teach their kids exactly the opposite! :frown:

I go to a community college saving money for my parents instead of a University. They should pay me;)

no, dont live at home
apartment rent is $1400 in DC. one bedroom by myself.

Im graduating very soon and thank god i have a full-time job lined up. if i had to stay at home though, I wouldnt be paying rent. my parents are just like that...they let me sponge off until Im up on my feet. however, consequently i have to cover them when they get older.
