BS the loyalty thing. Where is the love ... er ... loyalty when the company down sizes, aka layoffs.

You take jobs with another company because they offer more money or you have a job from hell. (That is a disaster recovery scenario and not advancement ... which is not your case.) A worth while increase. You can have a 5 page resume with numerous accomplishments, but in the end it comes down to your pay history. Not the degrees, not the society memberships, not even the time employed ... it is the pay history. Of course to have the pay history, you have to follow the proper path to get good pay increases.

Networking doesn't hurt either. You don't burn bridges, a little singing might occur, but in years to come your current manager might be your employee.


Also do be flattered into taking a new job. Compliments do not pay bills and do not show up on resumes.

NEVER give your salary history to an employer. You should be the only one to know your pay history.

Interesting, b/c they usually ask. I guess the better response is "Well, I'm asking for xxx for this position" or something like that.
