i just discovered (yeah ok, i'm a little late) Reddit and the "random" button;

<omg> they got boards for absolutely ANYTHING. seriously how can anyone be interested in that stuff, have they got no life at all ?

A few examples of boards people dedicate their time to (warning: makes 4chan look intellectual)

/r/goats/
/r/Cumberbitches/
/r/blackpeoplegifs/
/r/transpositive/
/r/UniversityofReddit/
/r/That70sshow/
/r/RATS/
/r/oddlysatisfying/ << BEST
/r/neopets/
/r/koalas/

etc.

some are so weird i can't even figure out what they are about.

oh, and the LINK: http://www.reddit.com/r/random/

Is Reddit sort of like an updated Usenet?

pretty much except there's no binaries (except if you venture into one of the feminazi subs you'll get a very long speech about binary genders and how it's wrong).

some subreddits really shouldn't exist, and people really shouldn't go looking for that shit. I'm not even talking /r/spacedicks here.

I've seen subreddits that ... well the best way to describe it would be in gif form.

i don't disagree.

but to be shocked that people who are like-minded about something find a way to come together and talk about it is just ignorant.

whether you are into something or not, like something or dislike it, find something truly beautiful or completely revolting, there are bound to be other people who feel the same way you do. and people want to talk to other people who share their interests. if not reddit, then some other way.

and for the record, OP mentioned pretty ordinary stuff:

/r/goats/
/r/Cumberbitches/
/r/blackpeoplegifs/
/r/transpositive/
/r/UniversityofReddit/
/r/That70sshow/
/r/RATS/
/r/oddlysatisfying/ << BEST
/r/neopets/
/r/koalas/

I have heard about reddit for years but have never been on there, I should sign up to see what all the hype is about

Just go. You don't have to signup unless you want to post, and signup only consists of username:password. Nothing extravagant.

Edit:
RedditEnhancementSuite is virtually required for a decent experience. That's a script that adds features, and makes it easier to use.

Reddit is an awful site where fedora-wearing neckbeards and socially awkward nerds repost gifs from ten years ago and whine.

I thought it must be pretty mainstream since I have heard about the president and other famous people being on there

It is a forum and the stuff in the op are like like the different boards here?

Yea. It's like a slightly cleaned up 4chan. You can create any new subreddit you like. It doesn't have the community feel AT has, but it isn't quite as anonymous as 4chan. I like it for news links much more than the discussion, which is generally fairly poor.

depends on the subreddit, but the more populated ones are pretty mainstream.
