Discover denied my card because I made 4 purchases in one day!!

I have been a big proponent of Discover but now they must die. I went to the mall to get some shoes and stuff, I visited 4 stores and got $200 worth of crap. I go to buy $12 in cards at Hallmark... DENIED!!

I got home and had a voicemail from their security guys calling to verify activity. When I returned the call, they explained that they thought the card was stolen... wtf? They can blow me if they're gonna deny my card under those circumstances. I've been a customer for 10 years and charge about $20k/year.

I wrote a nicely worded nasty gram to their customer service. I am eager to see their reply.

i dunno it's annoying, but i can see how that would be a life saver if somebody actually did steal your card

Jesus.. relax.

All companies do this, in varying levels. Was it that much of an inconvenience? Lemme gues.. You wanna sue them now too..

they have done the same to me. I live in TX and go to school in PA. Every time i charge something they call my house telling my parents of suspicious activity. I cant transfer the card up here because its tied in to my parents account, so i just stopped using it.

Why? If your card gets stolen, you just call them and tell them when it was lost. They then deny all transactions after the time you lost it. What's the big deal? They shouldn't be denying transactions on circumstances like that.

They must have some sort of algorithm in place to track such things. The pattern of your purchasing must have set something off...and credit card companies want to limit their liability in the event of theft.

It's for your protection, dumbass. A trifle annoying and perhaps inconvenient but easily taken care of. Better that than some jerk stealing your card and maxing it out.

You're kind of a dick.

Yes it was inconvenient, and somewhat embarrassing to have my card denied. I don't want to sue them, but that's a good try at putting words in my mouth.

$200 != maxing out. Thanks for playing though.

Yeah all of a sudden i started using my paypal debit card everywhere, they called the first 2 days to see if it was me 🙂 lol

The Mobile Speedpass people called me the other day to say they were worried about a $150 purchase at a station. It was only my wife buying gas cards for her employees for them going out of their way at work.

BTW-The GM Card has caught two fraudulent purchases made with my card before I even knew about them.

i guess you're right. but i'm still right.

you're right, no skin off your back if there are charges like that. but the reason they are able to provide 100% guarantee is because they stop it before it happens. if they were to just let the card get charged whatever, they would lose a lot more money, and probably have to take away the 100% protection guarantee.

They've done the same to me Pupboy..........after making several online and B&M charges in one day. Voicemail left...took all of 30 seconds to verify it was me making the purchases. Personally, I was glad they were watching out.

It's not necessarily the amount but also the number of purchases. Maybe you shouldn't be playing with credit cards.

and you were unable to go to a payphone in the mall, or ask the person at hallmark if you could use their phone why?

Quit your whining...

four purchases for $200 after 10 years of charging 20K/year should NOT trigger a denial unless he was overseas or something. I'd be pissed too. Imagine if he had bought new clothes for a date only to have the dinner be declined in front of his date. 😱

Your going to call up your credit card company every time they decide to deny a transaction? That could be once a week if you use your card a lot...

i got denied on my fleet platinum visa card at bb last month, i have not used the card since. it was a new card too. i have been putting back making the call complaining due to lack of time. thing is, i have a trip planned in 2 weeks, and things are gonna be a bitch.

i also got denied on another visa card, but the company called and i verified the purchases i made.

the security measures are good, but for ppl like me who go to movies infrequently, getting denied sucks.

problem is, i dont have a drivers license\state id cuz i dont have time to go to the dmv.

because it's easier to use another card, perhaps? if whining were disallowed here, the entire fzking OT forum would disappear 🙂

I have had this happen to me before and while it is annoying, it could save a lot of potential charges should your card have been stolen.

BTW, did you ever think to call them from the store and ask why the charge was declined? Or did you just walk out of the store?

Quit whining, as Discover was simply trying to cover their ass as well as yours.

Yes I agree it's good they're watching out, but not to the degree they did today. I also find it strange that they had no problem with the $1500 I charged at my flight school the other day, but a $12 pack of Christmas cards set off the warning meter.

It's not the first thing you think about, honestly. And to be truthful, I think every credit card user should experience a declined card so they know how to deal with it rationally the second time around. I was a cashier in high school and you can tell the "first timers" from the degree of flipping out they do after you say, "Sorry sir / ma'am, but your card isn't going through." 😛

It would've been great customer service if the clerk offered to let you (1) use their phone to call the credit card company and (2) try another card and/or payment if it comes to that. Not *every* declined card is the user's fault so there's no need to put down pipboy and the others.

I didn't flip out at the store, I know they have nothing to do with it. She ran the card twice, when it didn't go I said "oh well" and gave them another. No problem.
