I hate discover, they cancelled my card because I bought a laptop,

they said : "irregular purchasing habits, closed" didn't even tell me they closed it after until I used my card.

ummm that is really wierd.
Even when I bought my 3 HP's ZD8000s ($2300 each) they just called and asked to verify the purchase.
Discover and Amex are the only ones i use and the only ones worth keeping.... "it pays to discover"

MasterCard you can use it everywhere...and you get cash back on purchases.

What do you suppose "stand alone gasoline stations" are? Does Sam's gas count? What would be a nonstand alone gas station?

edit: called Discover and the CSR said that Sam's, Walmart, Kroger (I don't have Kroger stores so am not familiar with their gas station setup) and anything similar DOESN'T count. Exxon, BP, Raceway, etc DO count. Hope that is of some help.

Yes, you just get additional cash back for gas and some ticket purchases. Discover runs these all the time. The current one has been for additional cashback for purchases made at home improvement stores and a couple of other things. They had one that gave you 10% back on restaurants charges and some others I can't remember.

Yeah -- they've been running rotating promotions for about a year now. I've been posting them whenever I find them. Other promotions for additional cash back included: restaurants, academics (schools and colleges) and fitness, home improvement, and now they're doing gas and some entertainment.

Interstingly, the restaurants and gas promos got the most posts in response. The others got almost nothing. Anyone want to make some conclusions on the characteristics of the anandtech demographic based on these observations?

Good deal. I maxed out the tuition one and almost maxed out the home improvement one when they were offerred. I've almost stopped using my Discover until these promos came along. Most other cash back cards have superior benefits without the tiering system that Discover has.

They HAD a promotion that gave 10% back on restaurant purchases. That was in Sep and Oct 2004.
