Discover Card 5% back on Gas purchases

Glad I could help.

Yeah, I know there are other, better credit cards as far as cash back goes, that's why I said "Helpful if you don't have another, better gas card". But for those who use their discover card the sign up is easy, free, and you get upped to 5% back. If you're going to use your discover card to buy gas anyway, there's really no reason not to sign up! I just wanted to let others know that they were doing the gas promotion again.

I called 1-800-DISCOVER to add myself to this deal and the rep said Discover now has an "all the time" 5% off gas card that won't expire on 6/30 like this deal will. Otherwise, it's the same as the regular Discover card, but instead of changing deals for cashback, it ALWAYS saves you 5% off gas...and you don't get to participate in the other deals.

I prefer that since that's the main thing I use my Discover for. No cost to change to that account type or anything, and it won't change your account number. It's just a change in their system as to the type of cashback account you have.

i have citi and use that till i hit $300 .. then use my chase card... I also have discover card the 5% changes seems like every quarter.. like from jan - end of march it was all medical bills get 5% cash back which came in handy because my wife jsut gave birth earlier this year.. and i charged all medical bills to my discover card... i was going to try and change to there 5% resturant (5% back on all resturant purchases but they don't have that anymore) so.. i'll keep it.. and use it when something comes up during that quarter. last couple months came up over $50 and cashed out $40 toward my account and it only took 3 days to show online.

There is no cash back reward for Discover Card purchases at Sam's (Wal-mart either). Don't know if that rule applies to gas.

OK, I stand corrected. Discover gives .25% fixed rate cash back at Walmart and Sams (excluding gas). I just fixed it in my mind that there was NO cashback since that's about what .25% amounts to these days. Walmart negotiated this deal with Discover about a year ago, thus effectively screwing Walmart customers using Discover -- so I switched to VISA.

From http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/gasout.asp

Claim: Boycotting a couple of gasoline brands will bring overall gas prices down.

Status: False.

do read the full article. it's quite interesting.

Yeah someone sent me that stupid chain e-mail. Sometimes it amazes me what otherwise intelligent people will believe.

citibank mastercard with dividends pays the same 5%, and it pays 1% on everything else 5% on groceries. and other amounts to other stores 3% to buy.com and 5% at overstock for example.

not to mention everyone takes mastercard. simply the best credit card you can have i'd say.

I'm guessing the "deal" had nothing to do with directly screwing over Discover card customers, but more to do with reducing the "discount rate." That's the percentage a CC company skims off each sale using their card. Generally speaking, AmEx has the highest and Discover has the lowest. That rate can change depending on the bank handling your merchant account, and I guess if you're big enough you can negotiate beyond that. The "missing" 0.75% cashback probably was taken directly off the discount rate.

Why not get the citibank dividend card, you get the same 5% but it applies to any gas station at which you pay at the pump....

as many others have said, the citi divdends and the chase cash rewards card has already been giving 5% off gas for quite some time....

Just thought I'd pass this info along. Discover is doing their special 5% Cashback program for Gas and automotive purchases.

5% Cashback

Helpful if you don't have another, better gas card.
At $2.75/gallon, you get almost 14 cents back per gallon. That brings it down to ~ $2.61/gallon. Not too bad. Signing up is easy online or you can call 1-800-347-2683 to sign up. The 5% is good at Gas stations, Car washes, Autozone, Pep Boys, Firestone, Sears auto center, and Midas.

Offer is good through June 30, 2006.

If you already have a Discover card, call to cancel and they're run you thru a list. I said no to the balance transfer as I don't carry a balance but yes to the 5% gas thingy. My CSR also credited my account for $20 for remaining a Discover customer.
