Disconnecting chipset fan

I am going to disconnect my chipset fan (ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe), because it shounds like hell.

But first I want to know: will the chipset be fine? If NO, will it be fine if I install a chassi intake fan? If NO, what should I do?

I installed a Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler and it works perfect. The height of this cooler is a problem on some motherboards but it fits just fine with my Asus A8N-E. I would assume your A8N-SLI would also work well but check to make sure nothing is taking up the space just above your current chipset fan.

Also, Asus used to replace the chipset fans for free due to a known defect. They may replace yours with another chipset fan if you call and ask them.

WOW..EMULTRA, do NOT DISCONNECT THAT FAN..... what birdpop is talking about is he installed a seperate heatsink on it.. BUT if you unplug the fan and don't get a better heatsink, you will smell a burning smell soon....

AND NO, just having a chassis intake fan will not cool it....

try contacting ASUS and seeing if they will sned u anew version of that fan...they did a revision and sent em out to anyone who complaiend about theirs... that is your best bet....

Chipset fans belong in hell for their undenying evil, passive cooling FTW.

The Zalman it is, but do I have to take the motherboard out to install it? Isn't there some other way? I don't want to go through the hassle of the cables again.

THE HASSLE OF THE CABLES I TELL YOU, EEEVIL IDE CABLES. PLEASE MAKE IT STOP DR. LECTER.

😉

Sorry, I had to type that.

Yes, the motherboard needs to be removed from the case so you can access the plastic pin-clips on the backside of the motherboard. Be extremely careful not to scratch the motherboard when removing the current chipset fan. I used needle-nose pliers to squeeze the clip together so I could pull it out but I did slip at one point and was afraid I had scratched the motherboard.

Removing the motherboard and all of its connections is not so bad since when you put the motherboard back in, the chipset fan noise will be gone.
