Disc read error on 360

I've got one of the original 360's and while I haven't had a RRoD (yet) I do get frequent disc read errors. It's to the point I am buying cross platform games on the PS3. This issue isn't covered under Microsoft's warranty like the 3 year RRoD extension, correct?

Speaking of a RRoD... I did have 1 RRoD but my system wasn't dead. It happened immediately after powering on and the system was running normally. Weird, eh?

Aw, well. That's what I figured. Oh well, I got a few years of gaming out of it and I like the PS3 with free online play. Thanks, Queasy!

I had the same problem with my original 360, and replaced my drive. It's quite simple. You'll just have to remove the logic board from your current 360's drive, and swap it with the replacement one. You will want to get the same exact model drive though. Your launch 360 probably shipped with a Samsung ms25

Take digirams advice and replace the drive yourself, especially if it is in the last year or less of the 3yr RRoD service. It is to the point I wouldn't advise anyone use the $99+ MS repair service, since a new Jasper arcade is only $200.

Since it's not covered, open up your drive and adjust the laser pot. Don't go crazy and dial it down to 100Ohm or something though!

I had a bunch of disc read errors with my Dec 05 console about a year ago. I finally bought a new laser thinking it would help. The console then RRoD'ed while the laser was in the mail. 😛

I have the same problem. After installing all of my games to the hard drive I get no disc errors. I've gotten 2 random freezes in the past couple months but no DDEs

Why do you want to get the same model? I've been thinking of replacing my drive because it makes so much damn noise. If I have to use the same drive, I won't bother.

Easier to port the drive's key over. It's possible to do cross brand / model (eg. Samsung to BenQ) but IINM it's more involved.

Update: When I called MS the guy had me do some troubleshooting - status of light on power brick, un/replugs of power, video, etc. During our troubleshooting I got a RRoD on power up. Perfect timing! My XBox is on the way back now. Funny thing is, when I took it to the UPS Store to have it boxed up the woman behind the counter laughed and said it would be $8.66 for the packaging without even looking it up. Apparently they ship out quite a few. Her son was on his 3rd.

last time mine came back..

UPS guy comes up to the door rings the bell.. Natrually both kids come running over as well.. I open the door & my 6 yr old says "Ooooo whats in the box?" Before I can answer, the guy says "XBOX 360" with a clever little smirk since he obviosly returns alot of these..

I go "Thanks asshole, this was going to be a birthday present and you just ruined it".. He had a look of horror on his face for about 5 sec, then I laughed and told him I was just messing with him..

Haha, he's gonna think twice before doing that again. It would be funny if your birthday present to your kids was getting their Xbox back from repair.
