Disc/Frisbee Golf

Has anybody played this peculiar game? It's like "regular" golf, but without the golf clubs, golf balls, golf shoes, golf golves, ball markers, and divot repair tools. I bought myself a beginner's set of three discs, but apparenly sets can consist of 20+ discs.

When I was in college at UConn the campus had a frisbee golf course. It wasn't an official layout with the real baskets with hanging chains as holes. The course used various trees, light poles, fire hydrants and other targets. There were even scorecards available at the Student Union as the first tee was on the back steps.

The real serious players used to carry 3 discs, a 119 gram, a 141 gram and a 165 gram. The non-geeks used whatever disc they had lying around.

The set I bought came with one disc labeled "Distance Driver," one disc labeled "Multi-purpose," amd one disc labeled "Putt and Approach." They had other kinds of discs that varied in distance, glide, roll, draw, etc.

I live near Lake Tahoe, CA and there are some nice coarses there. I've just screwed around a bit, but it is fun. It's a bit like real golf though, in that it's a lot more fun to get good and stoned and watch the other people play.

yea FROLF is sweet, the 3 disks you got are prob something close to the 119g 141 and 165g disks, unless you get crazy into in thts basically all you need

There are a couple of Disc Golf parks here in Raleigh. It can be a lot of fun.

Edit: Just done a search, there's actually a course at the university in my home town, the oldest in the country apparantly!

I believe there was a film which mentioned golf frisbee, I can't remember what it was called:

I used to play it kinda frequently. There's a park in my area that has two courses. Really fun game. I only used two discs, one for distance and another as a "putter" (which it's actually called).

My former roomate used to play all the time, he had a bag full of like 20 frisbees. Honestly, I think it's a hippee sport, but then again... I've never played.

I play quite a bit. I only use two disks though - a standard midrange and a putter for downhill or bad laying putts. I usually shoot better than the chodes you see with an entire bag full of disks.

i'm in raleigh and play disc golf too!! I actually live in the neighborhood where the cedar hills course is, we played alot over the summer, I only got 1 disc now its way too easy to lose discs over the lake hole.

where do you play at?

edit: I wish there was a disc golf video game, I'm always talking about making one but have no skills :roll:

it's great. but those that take it really serious around here are funny... they have their whole throwing approach and fancy set up... to only hit the tree 10 ft in front of them half the time. I can do that in a split second w/ my eyes blindfolded I have a mid range driver and a putter. i suck, but it's fun

I've played at Cedar Hills and Kentwood mostly.

Hole #2 on Kentwood is always amusing because the hole is very close tot he main road an you have to throw parallel to the road. If your disc happens to go a bit too far to the left, it's probably going to get run over.

Is Cedar Hills still the best park in Raleigh?

Edit: Hmmm... Looking at the pictures for hole #2 it looks like you now throw INTO the park pather than parallel to the road. Maybe I was remembering a different hole... I need to get over there sometime and check it out. It's been too long.

I play all the time, and yes, the disc collection can get quite large. My wife and I own ~30 discs, together, and all of them has a purpose. They glide differently, fly at different speeds, better for uphill or downhill, better for left or right hooks, better for wind or no wind....and on and on.

There is a nice course at UW-Parkside (Kenosha, WI) that we play a couple times a week. I recently played a few in the Rochester, NY area that were great, too. Its a good game, because you can always have a beginner set in your trunk and drag some friends along. At my "home" course, I usually play about par to 3 under par.
