No shit, that's what I just said. This "missile defense" installation opens the door to more US installations on Russia's doorstep. It's telling Russia that we're actively campaigning to put our military hardware in their neighborhood.

BTW, show of hands, how many people here enjoy being spoon-fed the information about the "grave threat" of nuclear-tipped Iranian missiles raining down on Europe?

I wonder what secret deals GWB made with Poland to do this. How many billions did he give away so we can put missiles there?

A Patriot missile battalion. Prior to receiving their own a US PAC 3 battery will be moved from Germany to provide interim protection

According to the articles the cost for this will be split between Poland and the US, so all things considered the deal isn't that expensive.

That is a lot of speculation. Why go through the long process if all we want to do is plop offensive missiles at Russia from Poland? Out military hardware is already in their neighborhood and has been for years.

What do you think is more likely:

1) The US builds more military installations in eastern Europe.

2) Iran sends missiles raining down on Europe.

The liberal left doesn't believe in good or evil.
Anybody that thinks this is about good and evil is extremely ignorant. The Russians aren't being evil, they are being paranoid, and given what happened to them in WWII can you really blame them?

Yes, I suppose I could blame them.

While I wasn't around then I understand that our Army (Patton) wanted to go ahead on into Russia and deal with them, yet was not allowed to.

Had we gone in then, I could see the paranoia. But we didn't, so I don't.

I guess you never studied about the Siege of Leningrad by a foreign army.

-snip-

Yeah, I'm familiar with it. H3ll, I've even played COD ;)

But that was Germany, not us nor Georgia.

But I don't see Russia as paraniod at all, I see no evidence for that conclusion.

To the contrary, Russia has been getting stronger, their oil & gas revenue giving them great strength. And in turn they have been getting increasingly aggressive & confident.

They're acting from strength, and getting back to their expansionist policies and old bullying ways.

Poland is looking at risk vs. benefit. It figures on profiting by US largess in exchange for being the sacrificial lamb. They are thinking that the chances of Russia and the US exchanging nukes is slim, and the rewards potentially great.

The US motives are less clear. It may be just as stated, but there's a lot of pressure to make this happen. I suspect it is indeed directed at Russia as well. At this moment it's a gigantic finger directed at Putin, who will respond in some way yet unknown. My guess is that they'll quietly use their allies in the middle east to cause us no end of headaches. Joy.

The Russians moved in because of the old soviet ego. This was a demonstration to the Russian people that they can still strongly influence regional politics. Georgia has been a thorn in the side of Putin for a while now. Jerking around Bush is a plus no doubt.

And please, you mental midget, please . . . learn to spell "despicable." Your misspelling of "guarantee" is probably just a lazy-assed typo, but this is not the first or second time you've misspelled the relatively easy word "despicable."

Wow.. just, wow. Am I the only one seriously bothered by this post? I consider reporting it to someone but, who? Anand?

I know. Can you imagine having the balls to pick on another poster's spelling error after he misspelled "douche"?

Sad to see this post, so you think that Russia is just paranoid for 400 years for no reason, that it is natural state of mind for people over there? Sorry, but you are plain wrong.

when did i say they were paranoid?

they're looking for warm water ports and domination of the whole black sea region. that's been russia's foreign policy goal since they started fighting the turks hundreds of years ago.

I agree with the op here partially. The Polish government is a wasteful organization that is totally incompetent.

Poland is naive enough to think that great things are going to happen for them because they are an ally of the US. This is also the reason Poland sent troops to Iraq because the US said it would be their ally, and would give them some military technology and a few F16s.

Well the US is now balking at the initial offer and that is also the reason Poland is pulling out its troops from Iraq. US does only what is in its interest (which is expected) but if other nations out there think that we do things out of the goodness of our heart, they are mistaken.

Funny thing is, with the power plays that Russia has shown itself quite capable and willing to take part in, a missile shield and upgraded anti-aircraft defence network is probably looking mighty tempting to most of Europe right about now.

God damn I bet you'd jerk off if you could use a Russian flag avatar.
You think it would be a good thing if Russia invaded Poland for wanting to keep themselves a soverign nation?

You hate the US so much that you would support a nation that is 100's of times worse than the US in policies and practice.

Wait, who are you accusing of restarting the arms race? There is only one country that is reaching halfway around the world to install a "missile defense" system on the doorstep of their cold war rival. Weren't you glad when the US responded fiercely to the Russian's attempt at doing the same during the Cuban missile crisis, or are you as clueless as the current White House press secretary?

Iran isn't a threat at all. They would be obliterated by the military of any major world power, and they fully know it. Our leaders just continue repeating the same lie, rattling the same sabre, to convince people they need protection from a non-existent threat.

Umm, The cuban missile crisis was Russia putting Nuclear missiles in Cuba, not putting interceptor missiles in place to protect against nuclear missiles. The US isn't putting nuclear weapons on Russia's doorstep.

Yeah, but didn't the other guy get banned? Free speech appears to be one sided.

True enough as long as the rules are fairly applied to all, I have no problem with and really prefer this type of forum.
