Disappearing Sound

My friend has a Santa Rosa MacBook with occasional sound problems. Every so often, the sound stops working. The machine will behave as if there is no sound device whatsoever. If she waits for an extended period, it comes back. Any ideas?

the common thing that i have seen is, especially with units that people are heavy headphone users is the jack gets stuck on output for the head phones. if it happens again take a look at the jack to see if there is a red light, if so thats why there is no sound.

did read sometimes that you can use a toothpick or something similar to nudge the contact back to say it not on external. other wise have to replace the logicboard(motherboard, systemboard which ever term you wish)

In her case, the volume slider is grayed out and the volume control buttons show the disabled sign when pressed, so this is not what is happening.

it could be the jack think there is a digital audio device connected, check the headphone jack to see any red light emitted
