Disappearing printers

Does anybody know what causes all the printers on Win98 machines to just disappear completely (empty printers folder) and then come back on a reboot sometimes. I've seen this periodically from lots of different people, but never found any answer as to why it happens anywhere.

Thanks,

j

We're not talking one printer disappearing or something like that, everything in the folder is just gone. For example, say they have two network printers installed, a local printer, and a winfax printer or something like that. The whole folder will just suddenly be empty. Upon reboot, all are there again. No redetection or anything, just there again.

I've seen this at least a dozen times over the years and I know plenty of others who have too, but nobody has ever seen an explanation.

yea, seen spooler errors cause this... your kinda screwed in win98, cant restart it that I know of. I used to just set all the printer drivers to print directly to the printers and not spool, which took care of 99% of the problems. note it can make printing larger print jobs slower.
