disappearing menu option in Win XP???

once in a while, my menu options completely disappears!
i click on START, and only the shadow pops out... all the other options (log off, shut down, favorite.....) are gone!

and also, once in a while, my whole desktop blanks out too. that doesnt bother me as much as the menu though.

any help would be great! thanx

It sounds like some kind of video issue with active desktop. You might want to attempt to turn active desktop off. Also right click on your taskbar and check the settings there. I only run XP at work and have only used it for a couple of months so I can't remember all the stupid options they've added, but that would be where the menu-type options are kept.

I thought I had it written down somewhere but I dont know where.
