So...Im trying to disable Aero peek on the taskbar. Ive gone to two different places:

Right click taskbar-->properties...the "Use Aero peek to preview desktop" is unchecked.

System properties-->settings button in performance-->Enable Aero peek is unchecked.

And yet, when windows are open (IE8, programs, etc), I hover my mouse and it peeks. DO NOT WANT! Any way to turn it off?

edit: After corky pointed out it wasnt peek I was annoyed with, I rephrased my question and title to accurately reflect my annoyance :)

Type "appearance" into the Start Menu then select the "Adjust the appearnce and performance of Windows" Control Panel object.

Uncheck "Enable Aero Peek".

Am using the Windows Classic theme and by default many cute features like Aero preview arent even available. That helps a lot.

I really wish I could just get the WinXP interface for Win 7. Maybe if we beg really hard that will be an option. I dont like the new start menu (never used Vista so its new to me) and I dont like how I have to dig really deep to change basic settings.

That's funny. After hearing people complain about XP's Fisher Price theme for years, people now want the XP "classic" style :^D

I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. I never complained about XP's interface and I dont even know what you mean by Fisher Price.
If you mean the gay ass curvy green and blue then yes, I hated that. But I never used it. First thing I do on a new installation is change over to the classic look, but with the XP style taskbar.

For me in XP or Vista I set the theme to Windows Classic, which removes the Fisher Price tinkertoy look in favor of just plain vanilla Windows.

I wasn't talking about you in particular. What's the XP style taskbar? Luna was identical to Windows Classic except for the curves and colors.

No I'm not talking about Luna Vs Windows Classic. I'm talking about the Big Bar on the bottom of your screen and the menu you see when you hit Start. In Win95 and 98 it didnt have much useful stuff on it. In WinXP they added all kinds of cool crap and made it more useful. You get it regardless of whether you use Fisher Price or Practical themes.

Also you could go back to Win95/98 classic Start Menu, but that was pointless.

Anyway, I'd prefer to utilize the WinXP interface with the power of Windows 7. The desktop gadgets are OK, but everything else is too damn cute and annoying.

Oh, Classic Start Menu; I hate that... The menu they brought out with XP was one of the best new changes they made. I didn't mind Luna's shapes, but the colors were terrible. I'd use Rainy Day Classic, and also some custom themes. After the Zune theme was released, I ditched all the custom themes and used Zune, and Rainy Day.

If you read my OP, I have done that already.

I hate the classic theme, and the 7 menu works perfectly for me, so thats not an option.

I might be misunderstanding the OP but to me it says you went through "CPL\System", which would launch an elevated session of System properties. If you're using a standard-privilege account you want to launch System Properties using "CPL\Performance Information and Tools" or doing as I said above, both of which launch the applet with your credentials.

I used this throughout the RC phase of 7 as Aero Peek displayed the desktop momentarily when switching between previews and it drove me insane. I can vouch for it working in both the RC and RTM versions of 7.

For those interested, Aero Peek doesn't show the desktop when switching previous in Windows 7 RTM.

Yes I entered the string you provided; however, it opens the same box as when I went through the menu. The box was unchecked already when I did it.

Try this combo toggle: Windows key + space bar.

What you are talking about may not be Aero Peek.

Aero

OK. It looks like it isnt peek. I have changed my title. I guess what Im looking to disable is preview panes. Let me re-itterate and rephrase my OP:

And yet, when windows are open (IE8, programs, etc), I hover my mouse and it pops up a thumbnail preview. DO NOT WANT! Any way to turn it off?

Thank you corkyg!
