Disabling Services in Windows 2000

I'm wondering if anyone here does the practice of disabling unnecessary services in Windows 2000, either to increase performance or security. I have a three computer LAN at home, all running Win2k Pro. On one system, I disabled many of the "unneeded" services, changed some policy, user rights according to this guide. Unfortunately, I must have changed something important because I wasn't able to logon to the other computers. I couldn't figure out how to get it working again, and so did a reinstall. I know its probably not necessary for a home user to do, but I am interested in doing this if it would help. Can anyone explain a bit or provide a link about disabling services, configuring user rights, policies, etc?
 
That guide is a bit excessive for a home LAN.

If by "logon to other computers" you mean accessing shares from My Network Places, then you cannot disable NetBIOS or unbind File and Print Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks.
 
I found a good service tweak guide on 3dspotlight.com. I am going to be using that to disable enable some services for performance. You could check that out too. It is good I think to disable some of the stuff you dont need. Like faxing for me, I dont use it I have dsl
