Disabling router feature on Zoom X3 5660A ADSL/Router

Situation:
I bought a Linksys WRT54GS 2.0 a while back, and I've had a very good experience with it, etc. Right now, I'm running DD-WRT (Sadly, OpenWRT didn't have much in the way of QoS) and it's been good to me in general. I had a problem with my old DSL modem crapping out due to overheating, so I called my ISP. They set me up with a new ADSL plan, saving $5 per month and getting better speeds. They also sent me a new modem, a Zoom X3 5660A. This thing also happens to be a router, making my problem complicated. Torrent smileys became yellow, most of my games became unplayable, VPNS stopped working, and it's been 8 months since my Dad said he would buy a new ADSL modem. I turned 16 late enough to make getting a summer job within a reasonable distance unimaginable, so buying one myself is out of the equasion for a while.. I ran a switch between the ADSL router and the WRT, putting me on a seperate branch, but I soon found out how god-awful the router's features and usefulness was. Lets just say putting my WRT into WAP mode isn't an option.

Short Question:
How can I disable the router function on my Zoom X# 5660A ADSL router, so that I can use the router function of my WRT54GS?

I've tried:
Putting the WRT into WAP mode. The Zoom router sucked badly and was not desirable.
Opening ports from ADSL Router -> WRT -> me. According to google, this works for some people. I'm not one of them.
Getting a new modem. Waited 8 months on parents, no avail.
Google. Hours of Google. I also read the majority of several forums and asked around at some other site, but nobody was familiar with the ADSL modem.

If you are willing to help but are not familiar with the adsl router, I can get screenshots of the configurtion page. I'm also willing to chat on any IM program or using a headset on Ventrilo if you want to get things done that way.

Help is greatly appreciated. I would really like to be able to use the internet for a little bit more than browsing..

Hey,

I feel your pain man. I am having similar issues with my dsl modem & router setup. Bottom line is that the routing capabilities of dsl modems are terrible especially during while torrenting. Anyway back to your question you have to options. You can either double NAT or not double NAT.

Double NAT is when you have both devices as routers. You simply put your wrt54g router in the dmz of the modem/router. That way you only open/close ports in the wrt54g. This eases some of the routing load on the modem/router. I dont undestand why this doesnt work for you since it is not terribly complicated to set up.

The other option is to put your modem in "bridge mode". This will essentially turn off the routing capabiltiies of the modem and hand off the public (internet) IP address to your wrt54g. How to do this with your modem is a whole other story. I just did this with my modem yesterday and it took me a day to figure it out and still not everything is working like it should. Bridging becomes easier if your ISP uses PPPoE since many router support this option. My isp uses PPPoA so I ended up doing some sort of "half bridging" which is very similar. In my dsl modem (Virata chipset) the term is called ZIPB. I read that on 2wire modems it is called DMZ+. I suggest doing it by trial and error as the literature on the net is very scarce on dsl modems.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Moj.

That's my goal, but I can't seem to find the DMZ options on my crappy modem.

It has to be there but it porbably has another name. In my modem it was called "BIMAP".

For bridge mode, this should get you there, I know this is an old post...but thought someone may need it still....

Access the Zoom modem’s web console entering the address 10.0.0.2 in your web
browser. The default User Name and Password are:
User Name = admin
Password = zoomadsl
Note: The default User Name and Password must be typed in lower case letters
The Basic Setup page appears. Click on the Advanced Setup icon.
* Click WAN Configuration. The WAN Configuration page appears. Make the
following changes:
*
o Encapsulation: 1483 Bridge IP LLC
o VPI: 0
o VCI: 35
o Bridge: Enabled
* Click Save Changes and then Write Settings to Flash.
* After the main screen loads, click Advanced Setup again.
* Click DHCP. The DHCP Configuration page appears.
* Change the DHCP Mode to None.
* Click Save Changes and then Write Settings to Flash.
(You may have to power cycle the modem the at this point.)
