I don't have a picture or fax viewer I know about in my XP computers. I do have a digital camera and download my photos onto my hard drive or to an LS-120 meg disk. Opening those photos in My Computer or Explorer is easy. Just click on the View menu and select how you wish to view the files and folders. For viewing my photos in Explorer or My Computer I simply click on View/Thumbnails and all my photos will be shown on screen in little squares.

Then I can double click on a photo and it opens in my graphics program.

So tell us how you happen to have a picture and Fax viewer?

The picture and fax viewer is the default viewer on WinXP, its kinda like the imaging program that came with all Win9x. The only way that I know of to completly disable it is with a reg. hack. The only problem is I can't remember how. There use to be all kinds of info, all over the web about this particular subject. Before any says it, yes I have already downloaded another viewer (ACDsee) and reassociated all the files to open by default with ACDsee. Can some one please guide me in the right direction, because the picture and fax viewer really sucks for opening large tif/tiff files

Gweiser,

I checked all files in my XP computer and I cannot find a viewer installed. What is the name of the viewer and fax reader progams?

I view all my graphics automatically with Micrografx Picture Publisher 8.01c. Also use Hijaack Pro.

johnlog,

right click on the file, chose open with, one of the programs you'll see is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Also you can go to help, type in picture and fax viewer in search, and you'll come up with some info on how to use it. I'd show you a sceen shot, but I can't figure out how to insert it in here. Tell me how and I'll do it. As for my problem, I have now solved it.

I prefer to use Irfanview as my default viewer for many file types. I had some trouble doing this when I first got Xp.

This fix listed on www.annoyances.org works very well, but don't forget to backup the registry key that you need to modify before using this fix.

gweiser,

Thank you for that information. I used Explorer to find my photos and selected one. I right clicked on it and sure enough a photo and fax viewer was listed. I selected it and my photo opened in the viewer. Was an icon to click on which allows you to edit the photo. I am going to experiment with the viewer/Fax program to see what it does.

I tried Irfanview before and did not like it. Micrografx Picture Publisher is a million percent better.

(Note: Corel company recently bought the Micrografx company)

gweiser,

In the Viewer I hit CTRL+E and it opened in the graphics editor. Guess what? It opens in Micrografx Picture Publisher to be edited. That is OK with me as MPP is my favorite graphics editing program.

On the other hand I can double click a photo in Explorer and it will auto open in Picture Publisher anyway. I guess the viewer is an extra step I do not really need. In XP's Explorer I can select to View Thumbnails and that is the viewer I use most often to select the photo or graphic I wish to edit.

The Viewer is a new program to me as I have not opened it before and I think it can become useful for me.
