Disabling ACPI on OS Install with Core 2 Duo & Asus P5KC

I'm installing Windows 2000 Server on a new system built on a Core Duo 2 E6600, Asus P5KC motherboard, 2GB Corsair XMS2 memory, WD 320 Gb Sata HD, LG DVD-RW IDE drive, onboard lan & sound, standard PCI graphics card

I need to disable ACPI power manager because this computer needs to have a modem installed as it receives calls at night and I need to prevent the operating system from putting the modem to sleep. (Disabling ACPI is the only way I've found to get this to work reliably under Win2k).

So I hit F5 and select 'Standard PC' to use the non-acpi HAL. I've also disabled the two bios entries that refer to ACPI. After I get part way through the textmode part of the installation I always get a blue screen stop errory KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Playing with the bios settings for acpi (but still hitting F5 ...) I still get the blue screen stop error but it I get PAGE_FAULT_IN_NOT_PAGED_AREA.

I have been able to successfully install the os if I leave ACPI enabled in the bios and during the os install.

I did read something about the EIDE port on this motherboard not being a standard IDE connection (runs off the JMicron controller) and does not work well with optical drives. I don't have a Sata Optical drive, could this cause the problem? Grabbing a straws here as the os did install for me without disabling acpi.

Anyways, sorry for the long winded post...ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

OK, probably a really stupid question and I've never used Win2K, but are you sure some of those BIOS settings you messed with aren't for ACHI, not ACPI?

ACHI is for an advanced SATA controller.

Should be able to right click the device in devmgmt and go to properties and in one of the tabs there is an "allow device to be turned off to save power" option

I'll double check about the ACHI bios setting, is ACPI required to be turned on and enabled in the os for ACHI Sata to work?

I don't have this board, and I don't know it's options. AFAIK they are always independent settings. When you didn't load the ACHI drivers, you got those funky errors. Don't change any settings in the BIOS unless you are sure they are labeled ACPI.

Although I have a different system from you I do know that WinXP pro blue screens upon startup if I turn ACPI off in bios. Can't say I've ever tried installing without it though.
