I am trying to update the Radeon display driver for my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 8X AGP video card. It said to uninstall the old driver prior to installing the new one. I do that and it requires an immediate reboot, then when WINXP boots back up, the new hardware wizard automatically detects the video card as a Radeon 9800 Pro and loads the same drivers I had before I uninstalled it without me being able to stop it. So I can't install the new driver without the previous one being there because of WINXP's "TOO MUCH being in your face" ways. WINXP must keep a record of the previous driver files somewhere when you uninstall them, because under the driver tab it still says Driver Provider: ATI Technologies. How can I stop this from happening upon boot up so I can install the new driver WITHOUT the old one being there? Help greatly appreciated.

Switch it to the "Standard VGA" drivers, rather than just removing the current ones. Windows won't try to replace them on bootup that way. It *has* to install some sort of driver to run Windows, and it (incorrectly, in this case) assumes you want the one that's actually for your card... :p

How do I switch it to standard VGA drivers. I can't find any option to do that under the display adapters categry or Monitors Category in Device Manager. I can't find it under the Display Properties under the Settings tab either even when I click on the Advanced option?

F8 just before the OS loads gives you a screen with lots of startup options, VGA being one!

I hit F8 and selected the option VGA option and the display was big, but it still loaded the current drivers for the Radeon 9800 Pro?
